In Sweetest Mistake (Sweet, Texas #2) by Candis Terry, Ex-Marine Jackson Wilder is a firefighter who is used to jumping in first and asking questions later. He has no problem defending his country or running into a burning building. But admitting to his feelings is a whole ‘nother ballgame, doubly so when it comes to his former best friend Abby Morgan.
‘He didn’t want to lose her again. He couldn’t lose her again. Not when he felt as though he was just getting a part of himself back.’
When Abby left Sweet, Texas just after Jackson enlisted, he sadly thought he would never see her again. Five years later, Abby waltzes back into town and into his life giving him a chance to find out what went wrong. Jackson’s emotions once again go haywire when she’s near, causing him to do and say stupid things. He wants desperately to convince Abby to stay so he can confess his love for her, but could it destroy the friendship he’s come to rely on once again?
“I know you’re not perfect. No one is. All I have to do to prove that theory is look in the mirror.”
His eyes darkened. Searched hers. “Then if neither of us is perfect, maybe we’re perfect for each other.”
Abby Morgan left Sweet, Texas once she realized that even though she had loved her best friend Jackson for years, he would never feel the same for her. Moving to Houston didn’t turn out as she had hoped either. As a newly divorced woman, Abby’s back in Sweet to put her parent’s house up for sale and hopefully find some closure. However, the sparks fly immediately when she sees Jackson again. More confused than ever with where her life is going, Abby wonders if it’s foolish to hope things could possibly work out between her and Jackson this time around.
‘He’d been her best friend…until the day she’d walked away thinking she could find something better. What a joke. There was no better.’
Sweetest Mistake is the second sexy offering in the Sweet, Texas series by Candis Terry. Centering around one of the youngest Wilder brothers and his estranged best friend, this is a story of second chances that will make you laugh but still pull at your heartstrings.
There is just so much to love about this book! All of the characters are larger than life…I mean, it is set in Texas, so you can’t expect otherwise. From Jackson’s meddling but loving family to the local residents, everyone adds their own personal touch to the story. I loved that even though there is such a strong sense of togetherness in Sweet, there are still realistic touches like gossipy neighbors and grumpy octogenarians. Things weren’t happy happy all the time. There were conflicts and personal issues.
I’ll admit that even though Jackson made some boneheaded moves, I still kind of fell in love with him. He’s a hero who loves his family, he’s a hands-on dad who isn’t afraid to be silly to make his daughter happy, and he’s genuine. I can see why Abby would fall in love with him! And she’s not too shabby herself. She’s such a caring person. Abby took care of her younger sister while her parents were MIA and was basically raised herself by the Wilder family. She also has a special place in her heart (just like I do) for animals in need, which plays into the plot a bit.
If you love rugged alpha males and a well written friends-to-lovers trope, Sweetest Mistake is the romance for you!
