In Sworn to Protect by Jo Davis, Shane and Daisy have a history. He a detective and she a juvenile officer, they got very close while working together previously. They used to be friends too, until they went a lot farther than friends do and Shane decided he wasn’t ready for a relationship. Daisy was hurt and determined to maintain a distance from Shane ever since.
Shane can’t let Daisy go as easily as he thought he could though. As much as he tries to fight the feelings he has for Daisy they look like they will slowly make their way back to each other. Daisy is cautious though, the last thing she wants is to put her heart on the line again.
Suddenly romance takes a back seat when Shane’s best friend dies suddenly and Shane finds himself guardian to his friend’s son Drew. Faced with a grieving, angry young man who also feels guilt over his father’s death, help comes from the one woman he wants more than anything but never though he’d have again.
There is romance and heart ache as Shane and Daisy find their way back to each other while doing their best to help Drew…but there is also mystery and suspense as they delve into the circumstances and implications surrounding Drew’s father’s death.
Do they have enough trust in themselves and each other to give a relationship another chance? Especially now that there is a 16 year old boy in the picture who needs to take priority? And as they sort through their feelings off the job, will the mystery surrounding Drew’s Dad’s death be solved?
Daisy and Shane’s interactions with each other was a times annoying (big miscommunications!) but at the same time the feelings and issues were what made them real. Shane’s biggest positive was stepping up to the plate for Drew…doing whatever he could for him and for his late Dad. He genuinely cared for Drew even if he was terrified at the thought of not knowing what to do with a 16 year old boy! Imagine having that to deal with all of a sudden, and the way Shane deals with it is admirable. It made me like him even more despite he and Daisy’s relationship.
Daisy is someone who is easy to relate to, her feelings and actions most of the time are believable and realistic. I really liked who Daisy was and found myself really hoping her heart wouldn’t get broken.
Drew was a bit of a mystery too, and I love how Jo played his role out in Sworn to Protect and made him such an important part of the story.
Sworn to Protect is the first book in this series (although I believe there was a pre novella that I have not read) and it won’t be the last I read! Jo writes a steamy, fast paced romantic suspense with feeling and heat, and lots of emotion that is easy to lose yourself in.
I would recommend Sworn to Protect to any romantic suspense reader looking for any or all of the above!
