The Baby Inheritance by Maureen Child: Reed is a successful divorce attorney who learned the-baby-inheritanceearly on from his own personal experience with his parents that love doesn’t last. With several marriages and partnerships on both his mother’s and father’s sides to prove it, he’s got his hands full with his career, and the occasional helping hand to his half-siblings. Sadly one of his sisters fell through the cracks and he lost contact with her. When Lilah, his sister’s friend shows up with the sad news that she passed away in an accident, she also brings him his young niece Rose. Reed’s not equipped to care for a child, but he’ll be darned if he’ll let another family member down.

Hiring Lilah to be her nanny while he figures out what to do is the best solution he can come up with. Lilah obviously cares for the child, enough to put her own life on hold to care for her. Reed finds himself attracted to Lilah and though he can’t promise her forever, he’s more than willing to have a friends with benefits relationship. When it’s time for Lilah to go back home, will he step up to the plate and convince her that her real home is with him and Rose?

I quite enjoyed this story of family and finding love. Reed might think he’s been turned off of relationships but the truth is that he does have a lot of affection and feelings for his younger siblings, even if that hasn’t translated into him wanting to make a permanent commitment with a woman. When Lilah enters his life he finds out two things – that Rose has the ability to inspire the idea of fatherhood in him, and that having a woman in his life like Lilah might be something he could consider after all. I really liked his character. He is a strong, committed, and caring man. Though children in books aren’t always my favorite, Rose is a delightful young girl and it was sweet to see Reed finding a place in his heart for her. We also get some scenes with his younger half brother Micah, a 12 year old who is experiencing the same kind of boarding school hardships that Reed himself went through. His empathy for Micah in this situation is clear, and he finds a way to improve the situation for him. The author does a very good job of making the family scenes appealing.

Lilah has a successful business at home in small town Utah, but her friend’s daughter and the responsibility she feels for her tops that and she’s able to let her employees handle her candle and soap making business while she’s gone. She’s a smart and successful businesswoman, but also a caring and patient woman. She’s impressed by Reed’s ability to adjust his living situation to accommodate her and Rose so quickly, moving from a hotel suite into a beautiful house in no time. It’s hard to say no to a man like Reed, and even knowing her time will be short, she’s willing to engage in a fling with him. They share some sexy scenes together. But Lilah soon realizes that she wants more – she wants the commitment that Reed is reluctant to give. Fortunately, it doesn’t take long for Reed to realize that he wants what Lilah wants too, and we get that happy ending but not without some bumps along the way.

The Baby Inheritance is a smooth flowing, well written story, with a genuinely nice guy hero. The scenes with him and the children are endearing, and on top of that we get a sexy romance too. 4 stars for another enjoyable read from this author.
