In The Surgeon’s One-Night Baby by Charlotte Hawkes, Archana ‘Archie’ Coates is finally ready to put her past behind her and find within her the vivacious woman she once was before her marriage. However, she never expected that making a move on her childhood crush, Kaspar Athari, would lead to her becoming pregnant. Yet, it’s the cards she’s been dealt. Will Archie be able to convince Kaspar to take a chance on her or will he end up breaking her heart?
“Maybe that’s what I need?” she tried hopefully. “A bit of danger.”
“Absolutely not.” Katie shook her head so vigorously her shiny halo of curls bobbed perfectly around her pretty face. “No chance. There’s absolutely no way I’m letting a guy like that get anywhere near you. Over my dead body. You can count on me for that.”
Archie frowned, confused. “I’ve heard you drool over the Surgeon Prince a hundred times. Are you really saying you wouldn’t go there after all?”
“Of course I would,” Katie scoffed loudly. “Trust me, I’d be in there like a shot if the guy so much as squinted in my direction.”
“So he’s okay for you, but not okay for me?”
I love reading medical romances by Ms. Hawkes and this story was an absolute delight to read because the heroine is finally determined to get back to the effervescent and bubbly woman she once was. Except things don’t turn out the way she imagined, especially when she discovers she’s pregnant and knows she needs to tell the father. Will Kaspar take the news well?
The way this story started had me liking the heroine immediately, as she’s very determined to do things she once did before she lost someone she cares for and before her marriage fell apart, and I liked how the hero helps her since facing fears and finding your way back to something you once loved isn’t easy. Moreover, I really liked both the main characters, as they’ve been through so much, but are doing everything they can to move forward with their lives and make something of themselves, especially the hero after everything he went through because of his parents. However, it was from the moment the hero and heroine come face-to-face for the first time where things get interesting and had me reading quickly, determined to discover how long it would take the hero to realize how he knows Archie. Will she give herself away with knowing something most people don’t know about him?
“Nice guess. Most boys have fallen out of a tree at one time or another,” he muttered. “Still, it’s refreshing to meet someone who would prefer to see the good in someone rather than simply believe all the media scandal.”
“No one can be quite as two-dimensional as the press seem to like to paint your Surgeon Prince alter-ego,” she breathed, willing the shutters to stop rolling down over his eyes.
“You’d think,” he offered flatly. “But they’re right about me. The bar brawl, the women, the flashy lifestyle. All things a girl like you would be best staying away from.”
With the heroine, she’s strong, brave and I liked how determined she is to get back her old self, even knowing that getting involved with the hero could lead to heartbreak, especially since Kaspar has quite the reputation personally and professionally. I also liked how good the heroine is for the hero because he needs someone that’s not out to use him like his parents did growing up. How could they be so cruel? Luckily, he had such good people in the heroine’s family to watch out for him. While the hero, I liked how hard he’s worked to get to where he is in his life. Really, he’s driven, confident and I could understand why he finds it hard to trust people. Yet, in saying that, I liked that he took a chance on the heroine because it’s obvious he can trust her. I also liked how protective the hero is of Archie, especially since the press love to follow him around because of who he is. Will Kaspar be able to protect Archie as much as he hopes?
“I thought I was broken, and beyond repair, but you found a way to put me back together, and although I may not always show it in the right way, I promise you that I’m learning and if you give me another chance I’ll ensure you never regret it. Not for the rest of time.”
Overall, Ms. Hawkes has delivered a very entertaining and wonderful read in this book where the chemistry between this couple was tangible and intense; the romance was delightful and had me loving these two together; and the ending was heart-warming, as the hero realizes just how much in love with the heroine he is and that he can’t let her go. His words are precious and I liked the response he receives from the heroine because of her pregnancy and the fact that babies make things so interesting in life when one is pregnant. However, it was the epilogue that wrapped this story up nicely, as the heroine is determined to honor her father’s memory and show that she finally has everything she ever dreamed of – love, family and happiness. I would recommend The Surgeon’s One-Night Baby by Charlotte Hawkes, if you enjoy the brother’s friends trope, the opposites attract trope or books by authors Ann McIntosh, Kate Hardy, Amy Ruttan and Robin Gianna.
