The Wedding Planner and the CEO by Alison Roberts: It’s not following the rules that gets you liked, it’s the person you are that does. Sometimes for rule followers and rule breakers alike it’s not that easy to hear though.

Penelope, Penny, Collins had learned a long time ago that you needed to follow the rules if you wanted people to like you. If you broke the rules than people would turn from you, they wouldn’t love you anymore. Right now on the verge of her biggest career success she knew she needed everyone to like here and to respect her.

Ralph, Rafe, Edwards had gotten to the top by not following the rules, other than the safety ones. He was after all head of one of the largest fireworks companies. He learned a long time ago though to never let anyone get close, that was when they had the power to hurt you.

When Penny comes to Rafe to see about a fireworks show for her Bridezella of a client she doesn’t know what to expect other than he wasn’t it. Somehow though between a rule follower and a rule breaker these two seem to be able to create wonderful things. With Penny loosening up and Rafe beginning to see attachment might not be so scary is it possible for these two to start imaging a future together? Or will a secret from the past be drudged up and make the future impossible?

There are many shades of Penny and that is one of my favorite aspects of this novel. Ms. Roberts has a delightful way of creating this multi dimensional character without making her seem like she is a complete nut case. She does a fantastic job with helping the reader understand as much as she does helping Rafe understand and that is really her focus more than having us understand Rafe. The plot line at times is a little bit far reaching and has some interesting branches but overall this is a story about two people who need to learn to live outside of what they feel they “need.” It also has some elements that may have you reaching for your tissues so be aware of that. There is sweet heat but nothing overt. It’s a nice read.
