In Their Newborn Baby Gift (Hope Children’s Hospital #1) by Alison Roberts, when Ryan Walker and Evie Cooper find an abandoned baby near the hospital where they both work at, both are determined to work hard to save the newborn. Yet, the more they work together, the more Evie finds herself falling for a man that doesn’t do relationships. Will Ryan break Evie’s heart or will she help mend his in order for the pair to achieve their happy ever after?

=”I don’t want to meet someone special.” Her tone came out a little more sharply than Evie had intended. No wonder Ryan looked taken aback.
“Why not?”
“Been there, done that.”
“And you’ve just given up?” Ryan blew out a breath. “Man, he must have done a bit of a number on you.”
Evie shrugged. “Haven’t had time to think about it, really. I’ve got enough on my plate.”=

I love Harlequin medical romances and am always happy to read one by Ms. Roberts and I’ve got to say that this story does not disappoint because the hero is one of the best medical heroes I’ve read in a while, even if he has bad taste in women in the beginning. The way this story started had me sympathizing with the heroine immediately, as it seems her family don’t know how to do anything for themselves. However, it was from the moment the hero and heroine meet for the first time where this story really takes off, as the heroine is intrigued by the hero, but realizes that he’s a bit of a womaniser considering the woman he’s with.

As for the dialogue, it was entertaining and intense due to the main characters back stories and their determination to help the baby they’ve found and locate the newborn’s mother. Will they be able to locate the newborn’s mother? Who is the newborn’s mother and why did she give up her baby? Furthermore, I really enjoyed both the hero and heroine, as both aren’t looking for a relationship, but somehow find themselves connecting because of an abandoned baby. Will the heroine become too attached to the newborn; more attached than she normally gets to the babies she helps care for on the ward?

”I’m not used to this.” She laughed. “I might turn into a pumpkin. You stay if you want to, Ryan. It’s not that far to walk to my car.”
“Don’t be daft.” Ryan headed to the cloakroom with her. “I’m not about to let you walk the streets alone. I’ve had enough, anyway.”
“It was wonderful, wasn’t it?” Evie’s face was still glowing as she wrapped herself into her warm coat.
“It was.” Ryan’s smile felt different. Almost poignant. He was too used to occasions like this. Jaded, even? He had experienced it through someone else’s eyes tonight, however. Someone who had stopped hiding in the background and come out of their shell. Come to life in a way that had made this evening unique. Magic, in fact.

With the heroine, she was resilient; courageous; kind; caring; great with babies, which is proven by all she does; would do anything for family, even though everything she does already is taking a toll on her; and I liked that she took a chance on the hero, even knowing he could break her heart. While the hero, he’s confident yet cynical due to things that have happened in his past that made me want to know more about him. He’s also hard-working, driven when it comes to saving patients and I liked that he couldn’t resist the heroine, even though he knows getting involved with her isn’t a good idea because he may end up breaking her heart. Yet, there were moments throughout this story that had me sympathizing with this couple too.

Overall, Ms. Roberts has delivered a fantastic read in this book where I loved the emotional depth of the story; the chemistry between this couple was intense; the romance was delightful and shows how good these two are for each other; and the ending had me loving how things worked out for the abandoned baby they found and had me enjoying the hero’s determination to win the heroine’s heart because she’s the one for him. His words are heart-warming and had me loving that the hero was ready to take a chance on happy ever after, despite being so adamant that forever wasn’t his thing throughout this story. However, it was the epilogue that wrapped this story up nicely because Ryan and Evie are meant to be. I would recommend Their Newborn Baby Gift by Alison Roberts, if you enjoy medical romances, the mysterious strangers trope, the opposites attract trope, workplace romances or books by authors Caroline Anderson, Annie O’Neil, Amalie Berlin and Tina Beckett.
