In Their Own Little Miracle by Caroline Anderson, Dr. Iona Murray is looking for the right man to help her fulfil her sister’s dream of having a baby. However, being a surrogate and having to give up the baby at the end isn’t going to be easy, especially when she’s fallen in love with the man that helped her get pregnant. Will Iona give up her chance at happiness with Joe or will Iona break the promise she made to her sister to be with the man that she loves?

He rammed a hand through his hair, his eyes troubled. “I only gave away my DNA and that feels hard enough sometimes. You’re talking about cradling your own baby inside your body for nine months! How will you be able to give it away, even if it is to your sister? I know you love her and you know her very well, so you know the baby will be safe and loved, but – what about you, Iona? How will you feel? And what if they split up? What if their marriage breaks down?”

Ms. Anderson delivers a powerful, emotional and very engaging read in this medical romance that encompasses a heroine determined to help her twin sister have a baby by being a surrogate; a hero determined to help the heroine and support her through thick and thin, but not knowing whether he’ll be able to when the time comes; and compelling dialogue that had me ready to cry when the going gets tough for this couple because Iona wants to do right by two people she loves, but it’s hard because she’s so in love with the hero. How can she give something so important to both of them up? Will she be able to give her baby up when the time comes?

The way this story started drew me in immediately, as the heroine is very good at her job, but there are some things even she isn’t capable of doing. However, it was from the moment the hero and heroine come face-to-face for the first time where things really take off, as there’s plenty of chemistry between Joe and Iona and they challenge each other. Will Joe be able to help Iona with her patient? Moreover, both the main characters were relatable, likeable and had riveting back stories that had me sympathizing with them, especially the hero as he’s been through so much because of his ex. So, why would he want another relationship with someone that could hurt him just as much or more?

”It was a tricky case to manage and you’d done everything right. You should be proud of yourself.”
She glanced down at the paper and her eyes widened. “Ten out of ten? That’s very generous. You must be feeling guilty.”
“No, I just give credit where it’s due, even if I am rude and patronising. And I did return your stethoscope, so hopefully that’ll earn my a few Brownie points.”
“Maybe the odd one.”

With the heroine, she’s a good sister, altruistic, resilient, courageous and I liked how determined she was to win the hero over because they’re good for each other and shouldn’t allow their pasts to stop them from having a chance together. I also liked how she handled the medical emergencies she has to deal with, as it’s exciting as she increases her skill set and learns new things when she teams with Joe. While the hero, he was a fantastic character due to his back story; the fact that his job sounded very interesting; and his compassion for the heroine’s situation, as he understands why she’d want to do something so altruistic for her twin sister, but that it might be hard for her in the end. I also liked the hero’s love for his family and that he has such a close relationship with his aunt; an aunt that wants to see him happy with his Ms. Right.

Overall, Ms. Anderson has delivered a wonderful read in this book where the chemistry between this couple was strong and present from the moment they met; the romance was heart-warming and had me loving these two together; and the ending had me crying happy tears because things happen for a reason. Really, Iona and her family are so lucky. I would recommend Their Own Little Miracle by Caroline Anderson, if you enjoy the surprise pregnancy trope or books by authors Sue Mackay, Charlotte Hawkes, Ann McIntosh and Kate Hardy.
