Today, HJ is pleased to share with you Carolyn Brown’s new release: A Chance Inheritance

Spotlight&Giveaway

Three cousins return down South for a homecoming that’s a little bitter, a whole lot sweet, and full of surprises.

Upon inheriting their sassy grandmother’s home and family bait shop, three cousins—Lanie, Jodi, and Becky Cornell—return to Catfish, Texas, looking for a fresh start. Turns out living as roommates in Granny Lizzie’s tiny two-bedroom house and running the Catfish Fisherman’s Hut isn’t at all like the idyllic summers they spent as children on the banks of the Red River. The days are long and hot, the tourists demanding and rude. And then there’s Chris Adams, a local river guide who seems to have eyes only for Becky.

But Lizzie’s death has set in motion a chain of events that will cause a new generation of Cornell women to come together. And thanks to this chance inheritance, some local fishermen, and the love of their grandmother, the Cornell cousins discover that sometimes an ending is really the beginning of a brand-new happily ever after.

Includes the novella The Third Wish by Carolyn Brown.

“I’ve never been much good at flirting,” he said, “because I just say what I think. Most women run the other way. Speaking of that, I should be going. I’ve got to make it to the bank before they close this evening to put in a deposit. I used to take Miz Lizzie’s bank bag with me once a week. If you girls trust me, I can save you a trip into Midcity anytime I’m going.”
“We trust you, Chris,” Becky said, “and I’m not running anywhere.”
“You didn’t answer me about going fishing tomorrow evening.” He took a long drink from the bottle.
“Are you dating someone?” she asked.
“Nope,” he answered. “Haven’t been in a serious relationship in three years. Are you?”
She shook her head. “I broke up with my boyfriend two years ago. I have seen him every workday since because we were both employed by the same company and part of the accounting team. It hasn’t been easy, and I’m glad to be away from there.”
“Still no answer,” he said.
“Chris, are you asking me out on a date?” She turned at the same time he did, and their eyes locked.
“I guess I am,” he said, “but it’s not anything fancy, like a nice restaurant and a movie afterward. It’s just a float down the river with some fishing poles and a picnic supper.”
“Who’s bringing the supper?” she asked.
“I asked you, so I’ll take care of that.” He grinned.
“Then my answer is yes. I’ll be ready at two thirty,” she said.
“I’ll be here at that time, then. I’ve wanted to ask you out for more than a decade. I had a big crush on you when we were teenagers,” he admitted.
“There’s been lots of times between then and now,” she said, and their eyes locked for a moment.

Glad to see Chris got the gumption to finally ask Becky out. Makes me curious to see why he didn’t ask her sooner.

Carolyn Brown’s books have their own special character. Her characters tend to be straight forward and put up with no nonsense. What you see is what you get. That doesn’t always work out for them quite like they thought, but you are guaranteed a good story and maybe a few fireworks along the way.
