Hi Ashlyn and welcome to HJ! We’re so excited to chat with you about your new release, A Phoenix Is Forever!

To start off, can you please tell us a little bit about this book?:

What’s it about? Well, it’s not a bad boy-good girl romance, that’s for sure!

Rookie Boston police officer and phoenix shifter Luca Fierro has the makings of a damn fine cop. Too bad someone in the department is out to get him.

Ex-gang girl Dawn Forest is psychic. She’s finally turning her life around by graduating from college, working in tech, and refusing to use her psychic powers to tip off the gang.

Dawn has psychic visions, but she faints at the sight of blood. As Luca walks by, she passes out.
When she comes to in his arms, she warns him about an incident he may be able to prevent. He would have dismissed Dawn as a charlatan, except she just wanted to help and didn’t ask for money. With his own paranormal secrets, he believes her.

She gives him her business card, then kicks herself when she realizes she shouldn’t be talking to a cop, in case the gang sees them.

The incident she predicted comes to pass and Luca saves a boy’s life. Now he knows she’s the real deal. When Mandy, a four-year-old neighbor girl, goes missing, he has to do whatever it takes to find her—including consulting a psychic—something the detectives won’t do.

He brings Dawn to the outside of the girl’s home, hoping she can get some ‘vibes.’ Instead, she gets another vision of blood and faints in the middle of Mass Ave. Luca carries her to his parents’ home to recover. Luca’s mother likes her right away—piercings, tattoos and all. As Luca drives her home she tells him the blood she saw was his.
The missing girl’s dad recognizes Luca in uniform and because he’s being stonewalled by the police, begs him for help. Luca has been warned not to interfere. He could compromise the case, let the perp walk free, even get fired. He introduces him to Dawn, who’s willing to help however she can.

As they get to know each other, Luca realizes how special Dawn is. On impulse, he asks Dawn to attend his brother’s engagement party with him. She too has been falling for Luca and agrees to go even though they haven’t officially dated yet.

The party goes well and she meets the entire Fierro family. As an only child, she’s overwhelmed by the big Fierro brood, but agrees to be Luca’s plus-one at the wedding.

The following day at work, Luca gets the rookie prank treatment. The Sergeant who has been giving him a hard time uses him in a tazing demonstration. Luca laughs it off, saying, “It’s all in a taze work.” Luca’s ex-girlfriend is the sergeant’s daughter. She insisted they keep the relationship secret. Luca suspects the tough guy found out and now he’s out to get him.

What he doesn’t know is that the sergeant is a dirty cop who protects the gang for a cut of their profits. He ordered the little girl’s mother run off the road when she witnessed one of their deals. That resulted in her death and Mandy’s kidnapping.

Dawn seeks help for her fainting problem and is sent to Minerva, Goddess of wisdom and war. She’s given some mental exercises, but is also told she’s at a crossroads. What she decides to do now will impact her whole future.
At the wedding reception, Luca tells Dawn he’s a phoenix shifter. When they go off by themselves to talk, she tells him she tried to rescue Mandy. Luca’s upset that she went in alone and didn’t tell anyone. She could have been killed. They call in an anonymous tip, but the gang, already wise to it, moved her.

Dawn lives with her grandmother. Her own mother is in jail. Her beloved grandmother slips on some concrete steps, winding up in the hospital with a broken hip. Luca goes with Dawn to visit. They tell ‘Gran’ about Luca’s abilities. She is concerned but pleased that Luca has been up front with Dawn. She has psy abilities too and knew there was something different about him.

Luca and Dawn go back to her home and they make love for the first time. Say “I love you,” and “I love you back.” (It becomes their catch phrase.)

Dawn remembers the blood she saw and how Luca was unconscious near jail bars. She has been waiting for it. Gran tells her she may be waiting for something that never happens. Premonitions don’t always come true. But Dawn’s do.

Police are tipped off about a child crying at an abandoned zoo. Luca responds with his training officer. Luca gets whacked in the head from behind the lion’s cage. Gushes blood. He’s treated for a concussion and as hard as it is, he must stay home for a while to look like he’s recovering as a human would.

Meanwhile, we see the little girl’s new hiding place (a motel room) through her point-of-view. A mean lady is watching her, but when the woman pokes a needle in her arm she falls asleep. Mandy tries to leave the motel room, but a scary man with a gun pushes her back in. She misses her mommy and daddy and wonders if they’re looking for her.

Dawn has another vision and now she and Luca are staking out the motel. The gang’s guard gets a call and leaves, so Luca shifts into phoenix form to follow him. It’s the first time Dawn sees him shift. If she thought he was delusional, that’s gone now. He’s magnificent.

Luca watches his sergeant meeting the gang member. Hears them arguing over money and the girl. The gang is keeping Mandy as insurance. The sergeant is getting impatient and transforms into a wolf in front of gang member Ice Spider. It’s clear Ice didn’t know werewolves were real.

While Luca and Ice are gone, Dawn’s ex-friend, Suzie, leaves the motel room. Dawn decides to check it out in case Mandy is alone. When Dawn says Mandy’s daddy sent her, she opens the door. She grabs Mandy and runs to the car just as Susie returns. Susie has a gun, but doesn’t get to use it. Luca swoops down, picks her up and drops her in a dumpster.

Will she shoot him? Will the gang arrive before they get Mandy to safety? And what will happen to the dirty cop?

To find out what happens next, you’ll have to read the book! (I know, that was mean, huh?) But if you were hooked, that means you really should read the whole story.

I love this series and all the others that have the central theme of “Don’t Piss Off the Goddess” Gaia tries to keep a tight rein on her “creatures” but one way or another they enjoy their lives.

I’d love to be the happy winner so I could add this book to my collection Ashlyn’s books.
