Spotlight&Giveaway

Hi Jennifer and welcome to HJ! We’re so excited to chat with you about your new release, An Alaskan Christmas!

Thank you so much for inviting me! I’m happy to be here chatting with you and readers!

To start off, can you please tell us a little bit about this book?:

An Alaskan Christmas is the first book in my new Wild River Series, featuring Search and Rescue hero and heroines and a close-knit, ski-resort community. This first story is a best friend’s older brother trope and a reunion story set during the holidays. Sparks fly immediately between the hero and heroine in this book and the fun banter combined with the strong emotional connection between them makes it both red-hot and heartwarming.

Please share your favorite lines or quote(s) from this book:

“Hot guys are rarely good in bed. They don’t think they need to be. They are selfish and rarely leave a woman satisfied.”
She’d obviously been with the wrong dudes. “In your expert opinion?”
She nodded. “As a doctor and woman. Yes.”
Damn, he’d like to kiss that smug expression right off her face, but the voice in his head told him to leave her drunk ass alone. “Okay, then. Good night.”
“What? Not even going to try to prove me wrong?”
In two strides, he’d reached her. Pulling back the blanket, he lifted her and, seating himself on the couch, he set her down on his lap. A leg on either side, she straddled him. “You sure you want to eat your words?”

What inspired this book?

I’ve always loved the beautiful ruggedness of Alaska with its breathtaking scenery and opportunities for adventure so it seemed like the perfect setting for a series that centers on danger and excitement. I was inspired to write a narcoleptic Husky puppy when I came across a photo of one asleep in their food dish. Diva is probably my favorite character in the series. And I’ve always admired Search and Rescue teams who risk their own lives to save others, so I wanted to write about these incredible men and women.

How did you ‘get to know’ your main characters? Did they ever surprise you?

My characters never listen to me so they are constantly surprising me…usually in the best ways. I’m not a plotter, so even my characters and their individual arcs grow organically through the writing process. They change and evolve naturally as the story progresses. I use a ton of inspiration photos to get to know them visually-their moods and their reactions to things, but I think their personalities develop through their dialogue and interactions with other characters and their surroundings.

What was your favorite scene to write?

My favorite scene/scenes to write was the first date, Heli-skiing Adventure that Reed takes Erika on. Their connection really grows and deepens in that scene and their initial sparks ignite into real flames. The scene that follows the date, when Erika spends the night with Reed in the Search and Rescue cabin is hot and passionate. It totally reminds me of the Ed Sheeran video for ‘Perfect’ lol. (I wrote mine first lol)

What was the most difficult scene to write?

The most difficult scene to write was the elevator scene/dark moment once Erika returns to her life and crazy busy job in Anchorage at the hospital and she has to end things with Reed because the long distance relationship and the distraction of Reed is affecting her career. Erika has no idea how to be both an amazing surgeon and a girlfriend and despite her feelings for Reed, she’s not sure what matters to her most. It was a very emotional, real scene and hurting my characters is difficult for me lol.

Would you say this book showcases your writing style or is it a departure for you?

This book definitely showcases my writing style. I think it is my best romance so far. The emotions are stronger, the dialogue is funnier and the depth of characters is better than any of my previous stories. After twenty romances, I feel my writing has grown a lot, especially over the last few years. I knew I had to dig deeper with this series in order to do it justice and resonate with readers. But it is absolutely my style-funny, heartwarming, sexy with a hot hero and strong heroine.

What do you want people to take away from reading this book?

I want this book to make readers excited about the upcoming holiday season and inspired by the romance between Erika and Reed. The conflicts in this story are very much internal, and I hope readers can identify with Erika’s struggle and how she ultimately chooses love, while staying true to herself.

What are you currently working on? What other releases do you have planned?

I am currently writing the third book in this series-one that I am super excited about. It’s set in the fall of the year and the storyline is dramatic and intense and so fun to write. I’m also writing a new Women’s Fiction that I’m hoping to start pitching this fall. And my alter-ego, J.M. Winchester is working on edits for my second domestic thriller. The second book in this series, Under An Alaskan Sky releases in May 2020.

Thanks for blogging at HJ!

Excerpt from An Alaskan Christmas:

The dog jumped onto the couch and continued to yelp, pawing Erika’s shoulder.
“Can you get it away?” she asked, her eyes closed, hands clutched in front of her.
“You allergic?” he asked, approaching and lifting the dog into his arms.
“No. Terrified.”
“Don’t worry. Diva doesn’t eat city folk.” He brought the dog to the kitchen and set her down by her food dish.
Erika glared as she removed her coat and scarf. “It’s not like we have a certain smell or anything.” She kicked off her boots and leaned back against the cushions.
He shrugged as he reached for a blanket from the back of the couch. “I don’t know about that,” he said. He bent toward her and paused near her ear to sniff. The action was meant as a jerk move to annoy her, but damn, it backfired. The tantalizing sweet scent of honey on her neck was subtle and provocative. He hadn’t been close enough to be tempted by it when she’d been in his arms, but now it clouded his senses.
Luckily, she shoved him away before he could do something moronic like lick her.
He tossed the blanket over her quickly and stood. “Okay, so you’re all good?”
She nodded, but her gaze was on his midsection. And her unblinking stare was full of unconcealed attraction. The same way she’d checked out his biceps in the bar.
He glanced down to see that his T-shirt had risen slightly on the right side, exposing his stomach.
Obviously his abs were to her liking.
“Erika.”
“Huh?” Still staring.
“It’s been a while, huh?”
She frowned, finally pulling her gaze back to his. “For what?
“Since you’ve had sex.”
Her mouth gaped.
“I mean, that’s why you’re staring at my stomach like I’m a piece of chocolate.”
“I was not,” she said, but her cheeks flushed. “And I’ll have you know, I have plenty of sex…all the time. Men beating down my door for it…” she mumbled.
That he wouldn’t doubt, except he knew from Cassie that she was a reclusive workaholic and he was willing to bet the only penises she saw were her naked patients.
“And anyway, even if that was the case, you’d be the last guy I’d want to break my dry spell.”
Okay, now he was intrigued. Especially since he’d made no motion to fix his shirt and her eyes were glued on his abs again, betraying her words. He crossed his arms, making sure to flex his biceps for her viewing pleasure, as well. She wasn’t going to get him, but all of a sudden, he wanted her to want him.
“Because I don’t think you’d be any good.”

If it’s an enemies to lovers story. I love the witty banter and awkward situations.

  2. Jennifer Shiflett

I love the it when there’s a little bit of angst, and when they feel like they really shouldn’t get together.

  3. Kay Garrett

I think the best friend’s older brother works wonderfully. You already know his family and probably like them – at least his sister. You have his sister in your corner if no one else. Plus being around him through his sister, you already know his good points and bad points as well as habits.

Can’t wait for the opportunity to read “An Alaskan Christmas”.

  4. Doris Lankford

I like the concept a lot because the woman knows the man as a friend first and then something happens and they each realize they should be together.

  5. Connie Lee

It’s fun to see how the friends older brother just notices for the first time that little sis has grown up and is no longer just an annoying tag along.

  6. erahime

Brother’s-friend trope is such a guilty pleasure to read. There is just an appeal to it that words can’t express.

  7. Kim

I like that there’s a little history there. And that the two generally try to fight their attraction.

  8. eawells

They already know each other and kind of friends before moving on!!

  9. Anna Nguyen

i like that there is already an existing connection that makes it more than some one night stand or fling. there more angst because of what can go wrong.

  10. Shannon Capelle

I like because its your friends oldest brother that he knows you and you both have a history and its a little forbidden.

  11. Linda May

Love Secret Baby stories and Second Chance Romance. Thanks for this amazing chance.

  12. dholcomb1

the characters have a connection, but there’s a new realization, but they also have to worry about the friend/sister’s feelings.

  13. isisthe12th

Best friends older brother is a challenging and often fun trope. Thank you

  14. Patricia B.

They already know each other pretty well, so the relationship isn’t starting from scratch. You get to see them see each other differently and watch how the relationship morphs into something new.

  15. Nicole Westmoreland

I love the secretive part…the hidden feelings and how they work around it
