Spotlight&Giveaway

Hi Melissa and welcome to HJ! We’re so excited to chat with you about your new release, An Enchanting Case of Spirits!

Hey there, fellow bookworms!

Please summarize the book for the readers here:

An Enchanting Case of Spirits follows a group of friends, each navigating their own crossroads. Our protagonist, Alyssa, is turning the big 4-0 and wrestling with the inevitable changes that come with it. Her friends drag her out for a night of fun, complete with an over-the-top psychic encounter that leaves her with an unexpected talent. She can see and communicate with ghosts, some of which she can’t shake soon enough. But as luck would have it, each ghost comes bearing clues to crack a mystery nobody knew they needed to solve.

Please share your favorite line(s) or quote from this book:

“He lifts his hand, running it over my scar. At one point, that would’ve been enough to send me spiraling, but not anymore. I know that he sees it like I do. A warrior’s mark. A reminder that I’ve been through hell and survived. It’s a representation of my strength.”

Please share a few Fun facts about this book…

  • This book came about because of my own ghostly encounters and the fact that I am, in fact, a scaredy-cat.
  • I took a tarot and oracle class while writing this book and discovered that I have a knack for intuitive reading.
  • Songs I had on repeat while writing AECoS: Evil Woman and Strange Magic by Electric Light Orchestra, Bad Moon Rising by Creedence Clearwater Revival, Zero by Imagine Dragons, Rollercoaster by Bleachers, The Cure by Lady Gaga, House of Fire by Sia, Blind by Lifehouse, Your Guardian Angel by The Red Jumpsuit Apparatus, Carry You by Ruelle and Holding On And Letting Go by Ross Copperman.

What first attracts your Hero to the Heroine and vice versa?

There was an undeniable bond between them. Both had weathered losses that made them kindred spirits. Nick also found himself drawn to Alyssa’s obliviousness to her own attractiveness. She was humble and refreshingly different from the girls he usually encountered.

Did any scene have you blushing, crying or laughing while writing it? And Why?

There’s a scene with Alyssa and her newest friend, Corinne (a wannabe psychic), where they’re walking through Alyssa’s newly haunted house in search of a ghost. Corinne was supposed to bring sage, but she ends up bringing something else. It was inspired by a real-life experience where something similar happened to me and a friend. I laughed the whole time writing that scene.

Readers should read this book….

An Enchanting Case of Spirits is meant to be an escape from the daily grind. Whether you’re seeking relatable characters navigating mid-life adventures, craving a deep dive into the spiritual realm, or simply want to unravel a thrilling mystery, this book has something for everyone.

What are you currently working on? What other releases do you have in the works?

I’m currently deep in the trenches with the next installment of the series. While I can’t spill all the juicy details yet, expect to join my main characters on an epic romance rollercoaster, all while their trusty group of friends tackles even more mysterious adventures.

Thanks for blogging at HJ!

Book Info:

When a fortieth birthday celebration leads to a ghostly visitor, four friends find themselves navigating surprising mysteries and spiritual hijinks, in this clever debut from Melissa Holtz.

Alyssa Mann isn’t adventurous, not since her husband died and she found herself the single mom of a teenage daughter. But there’s no way to avoid celebrating the big 4-0, so when her best friends drag her out for drinks and a tarot reading, she throws caution to the wind and decides to see what the spirits have to say. It’s all fun and games, until she wakes up the next morning with a wicked hangover—and a ghost perched on the edge of her bed.

Sheer panic sends her running to get help from Nick West, the (very attractive) detective who lives next door. When he finds no one inside, Alyssa has to accept that she really did see a ghost. As the dearly departed keep appearing, Alyssa and her friends do their best to learn how to control her newfound power. Trading insults with ghosts, tracking down family heirlooms, and getting closer to the skeptical but helpful Nick is more fun than Alyssa imagined. But when looking into one ghost’s past reveals unexpected—and unwelcome—facts about Alyssa’s late husband’s death, she discovers she just may be in over her head.
