Today it is my pleasure to Welcome author Anna Harrington to HJ!
Hi Anna and welcome to HJ! We’re so excited to chat with you about your new release, An Extraordinary Lord!
Please summarize the book for the readers here:
Merritt Rivers is a former soldier turned lawyer and lord who wants to do more than convict criminals – he wants to stop them before they commit crimes in the first place. So he spends his time patrolling the streets of nighttime London and investigating the riots now plaguing the city. When he helps the Home Office hunt down an escaped convict, he’s shocked to discover that Ronald Chase is actually Veronica Chase, a female thief taker, expert fencer, and the most intriguing woman he’s ever met. Unfortunately, she also represents everything he has sworn to stop. He soon learns—amid sword fights and royal balls—that she’s far more than the thief he assumes her to be. A undeniable chemistry pulses between them that soon has both of wanting more from the other than helping the Home Office. But she’s a thief while he’s a barrister; she’s the illegitimate daughter of a Portuguese count and he’s a newly minted baron with a reputation to protect; and they’ve both vowed stop a revolutionary group named Scepter from overthrowing the monarchy in a race against time to prevent the killing hundreds of innocent people in the process. When their two worlds collide, they must put their pasts behind them and rely on their hearts to find a new future.
Please share your favorite quote from the book
This exchange between Merritt and his best friend Clayton:
Merritt glanced up in surprise. “When have you ever not noticed an attractive woman?”
“When she’s wielding a sword,” Clayton shot back, deadpan. “A man tends to live longer that way.”
Please share a few Fun facts about this book…
- Fencing! — Both the hero and heroine are expert swordsmen, both trained by the best fighters during the Napoleonic Wars. When they meet, a fencing bout breaks out between them, and each attempts to best the other, only to end in a stalemate. I took fencing lessons when I was in college, and it was wonderful to put that knowledge to use in the book.
- The Court of Miracles – The name of the derelict warehouse where Veronica lives with her brother’s gang of thieves and dozens of other homeless people who have no where else to go named after the area of 18th century Paris known as the Court of Miracles. But the look of it—a former warehouse with big windows, thick wooden floors, and sailcloth walls in a part of the city where most officials fear to tread—was based upon a similar part of Paris in the BBC TV show, The Musketeers.
- The Prince Regent’s ball – The ball that Veronica and Merritt attend was based on a real ball thrown by Prinny to honor foreign generals and princes who had fought during the wars with Napoleon. The ball was described by Caroline Lamb in one of her letters. The other details from the ball—the stream with fish in the dining room, etc.—were taken from descriptions of other grand dinners thrown at Carlton House. (Yes, goldfish in the dining room!)
What do you want people to take away from reading this book?
I just want readers to have a rollicking good time with this book! It’s pretty much non-stop action from the start with the meet-cute occurring in street fight to the big finish when rioters threaten to bring down the monarchy. It was so much fun to write! The lead couple are a mash up of Spiderman meets Van Helsing, and it was so much fun to make them part of London’s dark underworld while still managing to work in a royal ball, lots of lords, and all kinds of bad jokes.
Thanks for blogging at HJ!
Giveaway: A Print copy of An Extraordinary Lord by Anna Harrington
To enter Giveaway: Please complete the Rafflecopter form and Post a comment to this Q: The series LORDS OF THE ARMORY is loosely based upon Marvel comic book heroes In this book, Merritt is based upon Spiderman, a seemingly average man by day who turns into a superhero by night. If you could have a superpower, what would it be? (I would love to turn invisible on command. Sadly, my superpowers seem to be limited to finding good parking spots on crowded afternoons.)
Book Info:
A steamy historical romance set in Anna Harrington’s star-studded Regency world.
Soldier turned solicitor Lord Merritt Rivers has dedicated his life to upholding the law. He patrols the streets faithfully, hoping to stop crimes before they can happen. While hunting an escaped convict, he encounters a woman also hunting thieves. She’s a delicious distraction, until he discovers that she is the criminal he’s after. She’s smart, challenging, and everything he finds attractive, but he cannot trust her.
Veronica Chase has hidden her past as a nobleman’s daughter. She confesses to a crime to keep her adopted brother out of prison. She now lives in London’s underworld, trapped between worlds, belonging nowhere.
Forming an uneasy alliance, Veronica and Merritt work together to protect innocent Londoners during the city’s riots. Moving between her world and his, they grow closer to each other and to the mob’s dangerous leaders. But their newfound trust won’t be enough, until each one faces their demons and ask what’s worth saving—the lives they’ve chosen to lead or the love that leaves them yearning for more.
