Spotlight&Giveaway

Every storm they’ve weathered…has led them to each other

Dan Amos lost his wife and son years ago, when they inadvertently got in the way of a death threat meant for him. He’s never had eyes for anyone since, and he doesn’t want to. But fellow Blessings resident Alice Conroy sparks something inside him…

Newly widowed, Alice was disillusioned by marriage and isn’t looking to fall in love anytime soon. Then a tropical storm blazes a path straight for the Georgia coast, and as the town prepares for the worst, Dan opens his heart and his home.

The tempest is raging, but Alice and Dan are learning to find shelter…in each other.

“Do you have parents you want to call?” he asked.
She shook her head. “My parents are dead, and after Marty died, for whatever reason, his family didn’t want anything to do with us anymore. Not long after Marty’s funeral, at his mother’s orders, one of his brothers brought us to Blessings, dumped us out on a street corner like unwanted puppies, and drove away. All we had were the clothes on our backs and the money he’d given me. It was just over four hundred dollars, most of which went to the place I rented for us to live in.”
Dan was horrified and it showed. “Wow, not much family unity there.”
All of a sudden she winced a bit and looked at the doctor.
“Did that hurt?” he asked.
“It stung a little, but not bad,” Alice said.
“That was the deepest part of the cut. The rest shouldn’t be that sensitive,” he explained.
“Okay,” Alice said, and then once again leaned back and closed her eyes.
Dan took advantage of the moment to really look at her. She had a fragile appearance, but looks were deceiving. Alice Conroy was a tough little thing, but she had thick, glorious hair the color of hot chocolate, and she was pretty.
Finally, the doctor tied off the last stitch.
“That’s it!” he said. “We’ll bandage this up, and you’ll be good to go. I need you to keep it dry and bandages on. Come back in three days. I want to take a look at it and change the bandages. They will stay on until you come back to get your stitches out. I’ll send a pain prescription with you when you leave. Get it filled and follow the directions on how to take it.”
“Yes, sir,” Alice said.
The nurse proceeded to bandage her hand, and when she was finished, she left to get the paperwork for Alice to sign and came back with papers showing she was being released, along with the prescription.
“I’m right-handed,” Alice said, holding up her bandaged hand.
“With you witnessing, I’ll sign it,” Dan said.
The nurse nodded.
“Thank you,” Alice said, and started to get down from the bed.
“I need to take you out in a wheelchair,” the nurse said. “Hospital rules. Be right back.”
“Oh. Okay,” Alice said, then glanced up at Dan. “My car is at the hardware store. If you could give me a ride to get it, I would appreciate it.”
Dan frowned. “I’ll take you to the hardware store to get your purse and car keys. Then I’ll take you to the pharmacy in your car to get the prescription filled, then I’ll take you home.”
“But how will you get your truck?” Alice asked.
“I can call any number of people for a ride, okay?”
She sighed. “Yes, okay, and much appreciated.”
Without thinking, he reached out and cupped the side of her cheek. “You’re welcome, and thank you for letting me help.”
His hand on her face was warm. His touch was gentle. The urge to lean against him was strong. Instead, she managed to keep her composure.
An orderly came back with the wheelchair and seated her in it.
“I’ll drive my truck up to the exit,” Dan said, and took off at a lope.
“Nice guy,” the orderly said, as he began pushing Alice down the hall.
“Yes, he is,” Alice said, and tried not to think about facing her boss with the news that she was ordered to go home.
By the time the orderly wheeled her out the exit, Dan was waiting for her arrival. He opened the passenger door as the orderly pushed her all the way to the truck. But when Alice stood up, Dan scooped her up in his arms and set her in the passenger seat.
“It’s too tall for you to climb in.”
Alice was still trying to process the fact that she’d been kissed by him, and now he’d held her in his arms. “Uh, yes…I can see that. Thanks again.”
He grinned, then leaned across her to fasten the seat belt, which put his cheek within kissing distance. She closed her eyes and tried not to think about that, then heard a click.
“There you are. Good to go,” he said. “Do you feel sick at your stomach? The seat reclines. I can fix it so you’re lying back some if you want.”
“No, no, I’m okay,” Alice said.
“Awesome,” he said, and shut the door, then circled the truck and got in behind the wheel. “First stop, giving your boss the news.”
“I don’t want to make him angry. I really need this job.”
Dan frowned. “I can’t imagine any part of this making him angry. Don’t worry. I got your back.”
Alice’s eyes welled.
“What’s wrong? Was it something I said?” he asked.
“I haven’t had anyone backing me for a very long time.”
Dan gave her a thumbs-up, then put the truck in gear and drove away. But he was moved by what she’d said. His rap sheet was nothing but a long list of him rescuing people in need. He had ridden a lot of white horses in his life, minus the shining armor. But this felt different. He was becoming invested in far more than her physical welfare. The unknowns were still an issue with him. Could he handle becoming friends, really good friends, with a woman and her kids? Even more to the point, would she be receptive to the idea?
He sighed. Okay, so his emotional starvation was finally being fed, but he reminded himself: Small servings of empathy, Danner, and small bites.

Sadly the treatment she received from her late husband’s family is not unusual. It is sad and hateful. I can not understand how someone could do this to children. Alice sounds like a sweet woman who is dealing the best she can with a difficult situation that is not her fault. Dan sounds like a wonderful person with lots of love to give. He needs to take the chance of being hurt again and focus on this family who desperately need it. Alice and Dan have just what the other needs to make their lives happy and complete. Thank you for the excerpt.
