“Ely waited until his chef left, then turned to Morgan. “Let me show you the backyard area.”
It wasn’t a question, so she couldn’t really refuse. She tried anyway, needing time and space to process all that she’d learned. Not to mention the fact she wasn’t ready to be alone with Ely again. Not with her pulse racing and adrenaline coursing through her system whenever he was near. She slid off her stool onto less-than-steady legs. “Um, maybe another time, actually.” She started slowly inching toward the hallway behind her. “Your estate is lovely, by the way.” Her nerves were firing on all cylinders now, for some reason, and if she wasn’t careful, things would become awkward. Or more awkward than they already were, anyway.
“Morgan,” he said, the look in his eyes leaving her no doubt that he remembered her now. “We need to talk.”
Oh, God.
Well, if she’d learned anything from the last few months of her marriage to Ben it was that communication, even when painful, was necessary. Letting things go unsaid or fester was not good.
So, left with little choice, Morgan followed him out the back door of the kitchen and onto a large flagstone patio. The sea-scented air surrounded them, and the sun finally broke through the clouds above, heating her already warm face. They followed a gravel path away from the house and down a gently sloping hill toward the water. Morgan kept pace with Ely’s longer strides as a taut silence fell between them.
“I’m assuming you know about my family,” Ely said once they’d stopped near the rocky shoreline.
“And you probably have questions.”About so many things.
But she never got the chance to ask, because Ely rushed on.
“The money doesn’t matter to me, in case you wondered. And as far as the locals are concerned, I’m just Dr. Malik, or Ely. All this other stuff—” he gestured toward the house and grounds “—I keep because it’s a tribute to my parents. Their legacy. Not mine. Someday it will all be donated to the island. I just want to help people and do what I love, in a place that’s important to me.”
“Okay.” Her paltry response was all she could manage. The fact he hadn’t just come right out and told her triggered her worst fears, despite his intentions. Granted, he had a right to his privacy, too, but after their shared past, she wished he’d just been honest with her up front. But it seemed there were a lot of things she’d wished for with Ely that never came true. Just like Ben.
Ely turned to her again, his tawny gaze intense. “I’ve wondered about you over the years. If you’d gone on to accomplish all those dreams you’d had. You’ve become a doctor. Good for you. Not that I ever doubted it. You were always so determined. Nothing would’ve stood in your way, Morgan.”
It wasn’t true. Too many of her dreams had fallen by the wayside or been lost.
Too many hopes had been crushed.
Morgan stared out at the water, swallowing hard against the constriction in her throat, old hurts and grief squeezing her chest. “I guess we both got what we wanted.”
He scowled, kicking a pebble with the toe of his boot. “Maybe.”
Why didn’t you ever contact me? Didn’t I mean anything to you?
She wanted to yell, scream, something, but stuffed it all down instead. The reality was people’s actions spoke way louder than their words. Another lesson she’d learned the hard way from Ben. If Ely had wanted to find her during the last ten years, he would have. The fact he hadn’t was surely answer enough.
