Today it is my pleasure to Welcome author Kate McMurray to HJ!
Hi Kate and welcome to HJ! We’re so excited to chat with you about your new release, Like Cats and Dogs!
Please summarize the book for the readers here:
Lauren Harlow manages the Whitman Street Cat Café, where she is in charge of a fun and friendly staff, of both humans and felines. Caleb Fitch is the new veterinarian at the veterinary clinic next door. Although Lauren and Caleb are attracted to each other when they first meet, they soon get off on the wrong foot. Lauren thinks Caleb is an arrogant know-it-all, and Caleb thinks Lauren is a flakey dreamer. Then a box of kittens arrives at the Cat Café, and Lauren and Caleb have to work together to save them. They have to put their differences aside to save the kittens, and then they act on their attraction. And then things get messy.
What do you want people to take away from reading this book? I’ve lived in Brooklyn for fifteen years, and I wanted to show the city as I experience. But I also wanted to show how neighborhoods can have a small-town feel. So the book has a lot of elements of small-town romance, but it’s set in a big city. And there’s a lot of Brooklyn in this book, or at least Brooklyn as I’ve experienced it.
Please share your favorite quote from the book:
This is a moment from the story that cracks me up every time.
Caleb was manning the front desk when Lauren walked into the clinic. When she spotted Caleb, she frowned.
“It is I, chopped liver,” he said.
Please share a few Fun facts about this book…
- None of the characters own cars, which is very Brooklyn.
- Whitman Street is fictional, but real locations in the book include Bryant Park in Manhattan, and Montague Street and the Promenade in Brooklyn Heights.
- Every major character in the series, except Caleb, adopts a cat from the Cat Café. (Caleb has a big, happy dog named Hank.)
If you could have given your characters one piece of advice before the opening pages of the book, what – would it be and why?
Be open to things. What gets both Lauren and Caleb into trouble is that they close themselves off to certain possibilities. When they open up, great things happen.
Thanks for blogging at HJ!

Book Info:
The fur flies in this hilarious romantic comedy where the owner of a Brooklyn-based cat café and the local vet go ahead to head. The attraction is instant, but can you fight like cats and dogs and still be perfect for each other?
Things are getting ruff in this Brooklyn neighborhood when new veterinarian Caleb Fitch moves in next door to the Whitman Street Cat CafĂ© and gets on the wrong side of cafĂ© owner Lauren Harlow. Lauren has a few things to teach the new vet on the block, and rescuing kittens is only the start…
Lauren can’t ignore her attraction to Caleb, but he gets her even more riled up when he argues with her about how best to treat the cats in her care. Determined to smooth things over, Caleb comes to the rescue when a new litter of abandoned kittens is left on Lauren’s doorstep, and they confront the fiery attraction that’s been building between them from the start. But saving the baby kittens getting them ready for adoption is only the first challenge Lauren and Caleb have to face, and when a real estate developer comes sniffing around their block, they’ll have to work together, or risk losing everything…

I grew up with cats but personally I prefer dogs. I have three puppers, a great dane named Bear, a shepard mix named Ruby and a 10 month golden (almost white) lab named Theo. All of which are rescues of some sort or another. We have an acre and a half for them to run and play on!
