Today it is my pleasure to Welcome author Teri Anne Stanley to HJ!
Hi Teri Anne and welcome to HJ! We’re so excited to chat with you about your new release, Lucky Chance Cowboy!
Please summarize the book for the readers here:
Lucky Chance Cowboy is about an Army Ranger struggling to recover from a back injury so he can return to his men. While he waits to be approved for active duty, Marcus helps his buddies train service dogs for other wounded warriors—and falls for his best friend’s sister, Emma. The last thing Emma needs is a guy like her late husband—a charismatic soldier with issues, but as they work together to support the Big Chance Dog Rescue, sparks fly. There is also kissing and stuff.
Tell us about the book with this fun little challenge using the title of the book
L: Little town in Texas
U: Underwater financially (the Big Chance Dog Rescue)
C: Canines for everyone!
K: Kentucky is where Marcus grew up.
Y: Y’all have to forgive me, but I can’t think up enough clever stuff to say about C.H.A.N.C.E.C.O.W.B.O.Y.
Please share your favorite quote from the book
Emma tugged at her spiky blue hair and frowned. “It’s like my vagina produced a cloak of invisibility or something.”
Please share a few Fun facts about this book…
- Marcus’s dog Patton is named after a real dog.
- I just realized, just this minute, that this is the second book I’ve written where the main characters are thrown together at a trade show. Next time I need some forced proximity, I’ll send my hero and heroine on a cruise. Or strand them on an island. Or have them battle zombies together.
- Marcus and Emma eat Airheads candy while they’re in their hotel, which are made at the company where my very own Mr. Stanley works.
If you could have given your characters one piece of advice before the opening pages of the book, what – would it be and why?
I dunno—If I’d given them any advice, they wouldn’t have had such a crazy fun time falling in love!
Okay, maybe I’d remind Emma this is no time to slack off shaving her legs, and make sure Marcus stretches those back muscles a little more—he’s going to need them.
If your book was optioned for a movie, what scene would you use for the audition of the main characters and why?
I think I’d use the second scene, where Emma gets to the Big Chance Ranch with her increasingly confused Granddad and Marcus is both amazingly cool with Granddad, but sexy as stuffing (stuffing’s sexy, right? Like Thanksgiving stuffing, not the kind in a Build-A-Bear).
Emma was so distracted by Granddad—getting him and the dog settled, finding Jeopardy—that she almost forgot to be nervous.
At least until she heard a deep, rich voice behind her say, “Well, if it isn’t the world-famous Mr. Collins! How you doin’, sir?”
Emma’s stomach flipped as she straightened and turned to see that while Marcus’s words might be addressed to her grandfather, his gaze had been squarely fixed on the vicinity of her backside. And he wasn’t even sorry, because when she glared at him, he grinned, toothpaste-ad smile gleaming in his chiseled, deep brown face.
Granddad, oblivious to Emma’s discomfort, said, “Are you that Mark fella that Adam wrote home about? What are you doing here? You’re not AWOL, are you?”
Without missing a beat, Marcus said, “Yep, I’m Marcus, and no, I’m not AWOL. I got hurt a few months back. I guess Adam didn’t remember to let you know about that, huh.”
What do you want people to take away from reading this book?
I could go on for pages, but I think I’ll go with “Our pasts don’t have to define our futures, and it’s okay to change.”
No, wait: “Love requires a few leaps of faith, but it’s totally worth it.”
I mean, “Love conquers all.”
Or maybe…
Thanks for blogging at HJ!

Excerpt from Lucky Chance Cowboy:
Marcus was surprised when Emma held his gaze, a little smile offering a dare, giving him as good as she’d gotten. One eyebrow rose in challenge.
Other parts of him were about to rise in response.
“Hold that thought. Patton, come,” he ordered, and the dog, who’d been lounging comfortably against Emma’s legs, padded across the room and stood next to the bed. He’d taken off the big harness and vest the dog wore for work, but left on a smaller, soft harness with a very short leash attached, which Marcus now held while Patton slowly moved away from the bed, pulling his broken-down human to a sit.
“What are you doing?” Emma asked, her mysterious seductress face exchanged for matter-of-fact woman-on-the-job. “You should probably stay in bed for a while, shouldn’t you?”
Marcus shook his head, even though his body told him that yes, he should absolutely be lying down right now, with her stretched out above him, except suddenly, the idea terrified him. He gave her some semi-truth. “Lying around makes it that much worse later.” Truth. “It’s getting a lot better, actually.” On most days, not counting this one. Long term? Yes. He would get better. “The exercise routine I do helps a lot.” Hopefully. If nothing else, he could pull himself up the stairs with one arm if he needed to, though his pecs were starting to look like petrified double D’s.
A flash of disappointment was replaced by incredulity. “You’re going to work out right now?”
“No, I’m going to take a leak.” Because he needed to get away for a minute. He needed to think, without her standing there all tattooed and bejeweled and fragile in spite of her kick-ass exterior.
With Patton’s help, he shuffled across the floor, pretending he didn’t notice the way she watched him, and that he definitely didn’t smell that special Emma-roma that pulled him in her direction like a fricking brain magnet.
Finally he made it all ten steps to the head. “Patton, you stay out here, bud.” He shut the door and exhaled, holding himself up with one hand on the back of the door for a long moment and tried to think.
Emma thought Marcus was an addict. Or at least, she had thought so. Her husband had been an addict. He wondered if Todd’s parents knew—maybe not. Emma seemed protective of his memory. Did she still love the guy? Did it matter?
The woman he’d been fantasizing about for months was out there a few feet away, and it seemed she might want to get with him, and he was in here like a nervous wedding-night virgin. The truth was, he was afraid he wouldn’t be able to please her. Hell, he could barely walk. How could he put enough motion in the ocean to keep Emma floating for as long as she deserved?

Book Info:
At Big Chance Dog Rescue, everyone can find a forever home
Marcus Talbott is a soldier through and through, and he’s not going to let an injury keep him from his Army unit. Sure, his last mission nearly broke his back, but that’s nothing his positive attitude and work ethic can’t fix, right? In the meantime, he’s got a place on the board at the Big Chance Dog Rescue, and flirting with his friend’s sassy sister, Emma, is a welcome distraction.
Emma Stern is barely scraping by while working and caring for her elderly grandfather, but she’s running out of options—and hope. The last thing she has time for is Marcus and his flirting, sexy as he might be. But every time Emma thinks she’s reached the end of her rope, Marcus is there to lend a hand. Maybe there’s more to the handsome playboy after all…

Meet the Author:
When Teri Anne Stanley isn’t writing sassy, sexy, love stories from her home near Sugartit, Kentucky (which is between Beaver Lick and Rabbit Hash. Seriously), she’s probably doing some sort of arsty-crafsty thing and hanging with Mr. Stanley, her three favorite children, and the dogs. Sometimes she’s masquerading as a day job science geek. She’s definitely not cooking or cleaning.
