Today it is my pleasure to Welcome author Tracy Brogan to HJ!
Hi Tracy and welcome to HJ! We’re so excited to chat with you about your new release, My Kind of Forever!
To start off, can you please tell us a little bit about your current project?
My latest release, MY KIND OF FOREVER, is the second book in the Trillium Bay series. It’s about Brooke, the oldest of the Callaghan sisters, who’s just been elected as the youngest and first female mayor of Wenniway Island. She’s hoping to bring her hometown into the modern era but bumps up against a stodgy city council intent on keeping things the way they’ve always been.
Meanwhile, word of a jewel thief hiding out on the island gets the whole community in an uproar and the only person Brooke can talk to about this is Leo Walker, the new local bartender who is only visiting for a short time. Or his he?
Would you say this book showcases your writing style or is it a departure for you?
It’s definitely got the flavor of my previous work. Lots of humor, family melodrama, and eccentric secondary characters, and of course there is also a dreamy hero and a cautiously optimistic heroine hoping to find her forever kind of love.
How did you ‘get to know’ your main characters? Did they ever surprise you?
My characters surprise me all the time and that’s the best part of writing. Sometimes I feel as if I’m more of a conduit and the words are flowing through me rather than from me. The best surprises seem to come from secondary characters who pop up and steal the scene. There’s a character named Gina in this story who I absolutely love. I think I may have to follow her and give her a story of her own someday.
What was the most difficult scene to write?
I confess I struggle with writing the physical parts of the love scenes. I’m not squeamish or shy about it but I want things to sound fresh and new, and while I don’t struggle with writing the evolution of the emotions of the characters, there are only so many ways to write how Part A fits into Part B! I tend to keep my books more on the PG-13 side and let my readers use a little imagination.
What was your favorite scene to write?
Any scene with Dmitri Krushnic, the guy who wears a beekeeping hat all the time, even when he’s nowhere near his bees. Dmitri was one of those scene-stealing characters from MY KIND OF YOU, and so I tried to give him a little more to do in this second book of the series. On a side note, Dmitri Krushnic is the real name of one of my favorite actors. He doesn’t resemble the book character but I totally stole his name. Fellow fans of the TV show Supernatural may know who I’m talking about.
Can you list some things that inspired this book?
Usually I can pinpoint a spot of inspiration for a story but this one kind of evolved from the previous book. The series is about three sisters who grew up on a tiny island in Northern Michigan. MY KIND OF YOU is about the middle sister and this one is about the eldest. I can say that there’s another character who is named after a super-reader and I wanted to find some fun way to include her so I named the postmaster after her. And there’s a scene involving handcrafted pasties being sold on Etsy that was inspired by a woman I sat next to on an airplane once. In the words of the incomparable Nora Ephron, “Everything is copy.”
What project are you working on next?
I’m participating in a project with a dream-team of authors and I’m really excited for this book to be released. (June 2019) It’s called ONCE UPON A WEDDING: A FICTION FROM THE HEART SECOND CHANCES ANTHOLOGY. It’s a collection of short stories and novellas woven around a wedding and some kind of second chance. Mine is about a newscaster and a meteorologist who reconnect during a natural disaster and even though that may sound dark, it’s still a comedy. I can’t seem to not write comedy.

Book Info:
As the youngest mayor Trillium Bay has ever elected, Brooke Callaghan wants to prove she’s up to the challenge. She’s stepping out of her practical teacher flats and into her sister’s treacherously high heels…with disastrous results. But if she’s going to (literally) stumble her first day on the job, why not fall into the arms of a handsome stranger?
Leo Walker is a rarity on Wenniway Island. Not only handsome, he’s also single, funny, and—most importantly—interested in Brooke. Unfortunately, his reasons for being on the island are temporary, so in spite of the undeniable chemistry between them, he’s not a forever kind of guy.
When a private investigator arrives with news of a jewel thief hiding on the island, Brooke finds herself dealing with one kerfuffle after another, and Leo proves to be a delicious distraction. What does she really know about him, though? And the biggest question of all? Does this short-term romance hold the possibility of long-term love?

I had to smile about your comment about your story in the upcoming anthology. I am a Red Cross Disaster Volunteer. Those of us who deploy to disasters know how true it is about reconnecting and it isn’t dark at all. The disaster part of it and the suffering of the victims can wear on you. At the same time, you meet other volunteers who are dedicated to helping and after a few deployments, you see other volunteers you have served with before. They become friends and you look forward to seeing them again, knowing it will be at a time that is bad for others.
I look forward to reading MY KIND OF FOREVER. I need the humor and I know first hand how rich for drama family situations can be. Throw in a little mystery and I’m sold. A side note, thank you for the PG 13 rating. Yes, we do know how part B and part A fit so don’t need to spend a lot of time reading directions. I prefer to use my imagination.

My Kind of Forever description seems interesting and entertaining. I love your place names of Trillium Bay and Wenniway islands. I think side characters make a book more entertaining to read. I can’t read books that are too dark and lack the lighter moments but your books seem the opposite. I’ll have to check this series out
