Spotlight&Giveaway

New York Times and USA Today bestselling author Julia London delivers a sexy new contemporary western, where a lonesome rancher and a no-nonsense cowgirl learn that you don’t choose who you fall for—love lassos you….

As the firstborn son, it’s been drilled into Nick that he is the heir apparent to the Prince family empire. But cattle ranching has never been his true passion. Nick wants to be a pilot. However, when his father dies, leaving Nick to clean up the mess, he knows he must do his duty before following his heart.

Charlotte Bailey can’t believe that Nick is back to run the ranch. As the office manager, she knows it’s her responsibility to help him. If only he wasn’t so brooding and cranky–and so hot it’s a wonder his chaps don’t melt right off him. But when sparks fly between them, she’s adamant about staying away from a cowboy on his way out the door.

Nick knows the ranch’s pretty, smart, and capable office manager is off-limits, but he needs her. And working in such close proximity to Charlotte every day is making Nick crazy. She smells good, she looks good, she makes him laugh, but most of all she makes him want to stay….

A moment later, she returned to his office and stood just at the threshold, her legs braced apart, and looked him up and down.
He couldn’t help it—his gaze lingered on her bare legs. “What are you doing here? I thought you were on a hot date.”
“It wasn’t a hot date. It was coffee. That’s a lukewarm date at best. Actually, I’m not sure you can even count it as a date. It’s really a meet and greet.”
He looked at his watch. “It’s already over? Because you clearly said date in your scorching text message.”
“Are you timing my meet and greet?”
“It wasn’t even a half hour ago that you told me to get lost, so yeah, I’m a little surprised your meet and greet is over.” He looked at her again. “You look…” He tried to think of an office appropriate word.
One of her dark blonde brows rose in question.
“Pretty,” he said.
She looked surprised and looked down at her dress. “You think so? Thank you!”
Nick waved his hand as if it was nothing and took a seat at his desk. Charlotte came over to his father’s enormous desk, perched on the end it and crossed her legs. He really wished she wouldn’t do that. They were right there, slender and long and smooth, six inches from his hand.
“What are doing you here, anyway? You’re not normally the guy in the office on weekends,” Charlotte said.
“Had some tax work to do.” He had the lime green file in front of him—he still didn’t believe chartreuse was a legitimate word—but he followed her gaze to his computer screen. He had the diagram of a plane engine on his screen. The internet reception was much better here than at his house. All right, so it wasn’t just taxes that brought him into the office today.
“It couldn’t wait until tomorrow?”
“I’ve got plans tomorrow. I’m taking Colton Rivers up to have a look at the ranch.”
“Now that sounds like a date,” Charlotte said, and laughed at his withering gaze.
“Who was your date with?” he asked. “For his sake, I hope it was someone who used adverbs correctly.”
“So far so good,” she said. “I met him just last night.”
At the Boots, Stars and Music? That was a bit of sucker punch for Nick after the fun he’d had dancing with her. It had been awhile since he’d had such a good time and he wished that last night had been just about them. But that was dumb and Nick felt the flush of dumb in his neck. He didn’t look up from his desk.
“Don’t you want to know who?”
“Probably don’t know him.”
“Oh, you know him. It was Tanner Sutton.”
Nick jerked his gaze to her. “You were on a date with Tanner Sutton?”
“Meet and greet,” she said, her expression entirely neutral.
How the hell did she meet Tanner? He felt…befuddled. Yep, that’s exactly how he felt because no part of that declaration made sense to him. So he asked, just to clarify in his own head, “You went on a date with my half brother?”
“No, I had coffee with him. Technically, a frozen drink. But I don’t think that actually counts as a date, per se,” she clarified, putting air quotes around the word date. “But I’m not going to lie. He’s hot and I was hoping it would maybe turn into more. You look alarmed, Nick. Don’t be alarmed.”
“I am not alarmed,” he said calmly, but it was lie, because he was completely alarmed by this development. He didn’t know how he would cope with Charlotte dating a half-brother he’d known about for exactly a year and a half. “I’m just clarifying for my own purposes because half the time I don’t understand what you are saying.”
“So it bothers you.”
“I didn’t say that.”
“But it does.”
“No,” he said.
She smiled. “Yes it does.”
“I guess I’m a little surprised,” he blurted. “I’m still getting used to the idea of him myself.”
“Well, he’s a very nice guy. I think you’d like him.”

Great excerpt! Love the cover too! It’s hard to beat bluebonnets and a puppy for a great cover. (OK, Cowboys on covers are pretty great, but these days the bluebonnets and pup stand out.)

I am sure it will be another good read by Julia London. She always gives us good characters with complex issues to deal with. It sounds like Nick has been handed an awful lot to deal with that he didn’t expect, including a beautiful woman who seems intent on teasing and driving him nuts.

I read the first book in this series and loved it. I have the second in the series on my Kindle right now to read before The Billionaire in Boots. I’ve enjoyed these siblings and looking forward to Nick’s romance.
