Hi Laura and welcome to HJ! We’re so excited to chat with you about your new release, The Last True Cowboy!

Please summarize the book for the readers here:

This cowboy’s got one last chance to prove himself.

Carly Beauchamp has loved cowboy Austin Davis since first grade. Ask anyone in their dusty, backwater New Mexico town of Unforgiven, and they’ll say “Carly and Austin” the way some say “big trucks and country boys.” But after years of waiting for a wedding ring, Carly’s done with being a rodeo widow . . .

Austin never meant to put his career on the circuit before Carly. She’s always been his future, his one and only. But now that she’s moved on, he’s beginning to see where he went wrong, and he’ll do anything to win her back. The only thing is, Carly’s suddenly acting differently, and she’s definitely hiding a secret-one that will test the depth of their love and open up a whole new world of possibilities.

Please share a few Fun facts about this book…

  • This is my tenth book, and the first one to be inspired by a song. I’ve always loved Carly Simon’s, Jessie. It’s a song about not being able to resist something that you know isn’t good for you. I even named the heroine Carly!
  •  I normally know the characters, their problems, and what they need to learn, before I start writing. This book was different; the first scene just popped into my head. I had NO idea about the character, except her voice in my head – or where the story was going, but I had to write that scene and that town!
  • I loved writing Austin. There are so many ‘bad boys’ in romance . . . I wanted to write a true-blue one. Loyal and steadfast – the perfect guy . . .once he grew up. 🙂
  •  I’ll admit, Carly’s Nana is the kind of old lady I aspire to be. As Carly said, ‘ Nana’s always been quirky and outspoken, but the past few years, as she puts it, her ‘give-a-shit gave up the ghost’. She now says whatever she’s thinking, to whomever. We had her tested; it’s not Alzheimer’s. It’s more like Old Folks Tourette’s. ‘
  • I started this book before my annual fly fishing trip last year. I was beside a river in the back of beyond Oregon, when I stepped in a hole and snapped both bones in my lower right leg. Luckily, I had cell service, and 911 could find me by my cell location. A half hour later a deputy showed up, followed by an ambulance. But they couldn’t get to me through a swampy, dead fall field. They discussed this for a time, and decided to send a Sheriff’s boat up the river to get me. An hour later, they got me to the ambulance, and I had a dirt road ride to the hospital, 45 minutes away. Blessed pain meds! Surgery, a metal plate, 13 screws a wire and ten days later, I was home to recoup. And write this book. I normally plot on my bicycle. That was out; I had to find inspiration from a wheelchair! But it’s in the past now, and I’m so proud of this book!

Thanks for blogging at HJ!

Meet the Author:

Laura Drake grew up in the suburbs outside Detroit. In 1980 she and her sister packed everything they owned into Pintos and moved to California. There she met and married a motorcycling, bleed-maroon Texas Aggie and her love affair with the West began. In 2014, Laura realized a lifelong dream of becoming a Texan, and is currently working on her accent. She gave up the corporate CFO gig to write full time. She’s a wife, grandmother, and motorcycle chick in the remaining waking hours. For more on Laura and her books, www.lauradrakebooks.com.

WOW – that cover would pull me in, but it’s the storyline that would have me reading this book. Enjoyed reading the fun facts. Can’t wait for the opportunity to read this book.

So sorry to hear about your leg. We enjoy adventuring far from the crowd, but as you discovered, that can have its drawbacks. We are both now of an age that such things become more of a concern. I hope your leg heals well and you can et out and go fly fishing again. I find humor in a book necessary, be it subtle or a bit more out there. It makes what is said mean just a bit more. It sounds like her Nana provided a bit of it. The pursuit of a dream or profession can often take over your life. Time goes by and before we know it years have gone by and we have missed out on more than we realized.

Unfortunately some guys need a wake up call before they realize the prize they’ve lost.

Hope Austin wakes up before Carly gets away.

Wow, that was an awful adventure to Oregon. The book sounds great.
