Today it is my pleasure to Welcome author Paige Tyler to HJ!
Hi Paige and welcome to HJ! We’re so excited to chat with you about your new release, The Wolf is Mine!
Hello everyone! So glad to have a chance to share a few tidbits about my newest book The Wolf is Mine. I had such a wonderful time writing this story and hope you love reading it just as much!
Please summarize the book for the readers here:
The Wolf is Mine is the 13th book in the Special Wolf Alpha Team series. In this story we get to finally figure out what’s going on with that cat who’s been hanging around the SWAT compound the past five books!
Connor Malone is a police officer working for the Dallas SWAT team. He also happens to be a werewolf, but that’s no big deal since the entire team is composed of werewolves. Connor finds himself in San Antonio looking for a missing teammate, only to stumble into a magical ambush. But things take a turn into the strange and bizarre (which is saying something when you’re part of a pack of werewolves) when a beautiful witch shows up to help. A witch who smells really familiar—and who’s dealing with a lot of problems of her own in the form of a warlock trying to trap her as his familiar.
Please share your favorite line(s) or quote from this book:
This line appears rather early on in the story, as the SWAT team want to know how Kat knows all about the scars each of them bear.
“As far as knowing how you got the scars, that’s easy since all you guys do is brag about when and how you got injured.”
Please share a few Fun facts about this book…
- Kat’s character was introduced all the way back in Book 8 (Wolf Rising) of the SWAT Series. She was inspired by a news story we read about a real-life SWAT team whose pet cat/team mascot had gone missing. That story was kind of a downer, with no one being able to find the kitty, so we added her to our story as a way of making sure there was a happy ending for her.
- Originally, Kat was simply going to be a cat in the story, sort of a second team mascot to go along with Tuffie the dog, but as we were putting her into the first couple of scenes in Book 8, it became obvious that there was more to Kat than it appeared. She simply demanded more screen time and became a main character. That said, it still took five more books to get Kat together with The One for her.
- Writing the magical characters in this story turned out to be far more difficult than we would have first expected. We had to really pay attention to make sure the magic users didn’t come out being too powerful compared to the werewolves, who are supposed to be the big dogs in the supernatural world (was that a pun?).
What first attracts your Hero to the Heroine and vice versa?
Connor had been taking care of Kat the cat for almost a year at the time of this book. He met her in Book 5 of the series when she wandered into the middle of a SWAT raid and started following him around like a puppy. He couldn’t explain it. He simply felt protective of the little four-legged creature. When he finds out her secret, yeah, he’s a little miffed. He can’t help but feel like she was hiding this all from him. It’s silly, but it’s how he feels. Even with all that, there’s this chemistry between them that can’t be denied.
When Kat the cat finds Connor, she’d been hiding and running for years. She was at her wit’s end, not sure how much longer she could keep going. But with Connor, she found protection, safety, and companionship—the things she needed when she needed them the most.
Did any scene have you blushing, crying or laughing while writing it? And Why?
This is a small snippet of the moving scene where Kat and Connor wait to discover if the curse she’s been living under is over and whether they’ll have a life together. Again, this is a very small piece of the scene. I didn’t want to give away too much, but it’s hard to read this and not think about two people afraid they’re going to lose the love they’ve just found.
“I was thinking how ironic it is that I now have all this power,” she said, turning her head so that her chin rested on his chest, her eyes meeting his. “Yet I can’t use it to give us the one thing I want more than anything else in the world—to be able to stop that clock from changing and taking away everything we have.”
Connor didn’t say anything for a while, and Kat felt bad for ruining the mood.
“You may not have the power to stop time,” he finally murmured, one of his hands coming up to trace warm fingers up and down her back. Even after the number of times they’d made love over the past hour and a half, it was stunning how much his touch could affect her. It was beautiful. “But now that you’ve leveled up, as far as with the power you have,” he added, and she could hear the hopeful note in his voice, “are you sure there isn’t some way you can break the spell Marko used on you? I know you said you’d tried for years, but maybe it will be different now that you’re stronger.”
She let out a heavy sigh. “Being stronger won’t help in this situation. I wish it would, but it won’t. I’ve spent the past four years doing everything I could to understand the familiar spell Marko put on me and locate where he buried it inside me, but I could never find it. I’ve never even come close. And being stronger isn’t going to tell me where it is or how to undo it.”
“But what if it does?” Connor pleaded. “You never know until you try. Maybe it will work this time.”
Kat knew it was desperation talking, but seeing Connor looking at her the way he was, so scared and lost, she couldn’t say no. So she rested her head on his chest again, then closed her eyes and tried to relax enough to feel the magic flowing through her.
Readers should read this book….
If you love paranormal romance with thrills, action, suspense, danger, and the perfect amount of steamy angst, then this is the book for you. This is a story about fate being two people together against all odds. It will make to cry, laugh, and cheer as these two characters try to get out of their own way long enough for fate to make this work out.

Excerpt from The Wolf is Mine:
Connor was so damn gorgeous, it was sinful. Regulation-cut dark-blond hair, hazel eyes, a strong jaw with the perfect amount of scruff, and the sexiest dimples any man could possess. Yes, he looked tired and more than a little bloody. But she knew he was okay, and oh so scrumptious.
Taking a few careful steps forward, Kat threw herself into his arms, dragged his head down, and captured his lips with hers. Connor seemed a bit surprised at first, but he figured out the plan soon enough and started kissing her back. And like she’d always imagined, damn, could the man kiss. And the way he tasted should have been illegal.
Kat wasn’t sure how long they made out, but she was vaguely aware that she was getting a little dizzy. Purely from all the magic she’d been using, of course. Nothing to do with forgetting to breathe.
When she finally pulled back from Connor’s perfectly magical mouth, she couldn’t hide the smile crossing her lips, even though she was definitely starting to swoon now. “I’ve been waiting to do that for nine months, and it was just as good as I imagined.”
“Um, don’t take this the wrong way,” he said slowly, his arms still wrapped around her. “But do I know you?”
A part of Kat was disappointed he didn’t recognize her. But then again, she had looked a little different the last time he’d seen her. Taller, for sure. No tail. And hairstyle definitely different.
“I would certainly think so,” she said with a lazy smile. “It’s not like I let anyone rub my belly, you know.”
When Connor looked even more confused, she decided to cut him a break.
“I’m Kat.”
Her big guy didn’t have a chance to answer as Trevor chose that moment to appear at their side, leaning in close and messing up the moment.
“Sorry to interrupt,” Trevor said, an expression halfway between amused and pissed. “But what the hell were those things, what the hell did you do to them, and how the hell did you know how to do it?”
Kat opened her mouth to answer but then closed it again as everything around her started to get fuzzy. Wow, she really was out of it. Taking a breath, she tried to settle herself, only partially succeeding. Her vision cleared a bit but stayed dim at the edges.
“Those were simulacrum—or sims for short,” she said softly, looking from Trevor to the rest of his pack mates. “Magical constructs that follow simple instructions imbued into them with an empowered token. When I destroyed the stones, I removed the intent and purpose that powered them. As for how I knew how to do that, or how I knew how to break through the binding rune outside, it’s simple. I’m a witch.”
She would have said more—a lot more—about how she’d gotten to this point in her life, how she’d ended up at the SWAT compound, and why she’d felt the irresistible need to come save Connor’s life, but unfortunately, at that particular moment, the dizziness decided to make a reappearance. She swayed and slumped into Connor’s arms, her eyes fluttering closed.
Any more answers would have to wait until she had a nap.

I have wondered if animals have a human side. I would ask them which they would prefer to be. It seems natural to speak to animals as they speak to us as well.

Having known several service dogs, it is very easy to imagine there is a person inside. They are aware, intelligent, responsive, and know what you need from them. I would definitely tell them how much I appreciated everything they are doing for me, share confidences, ask for their opinion, and seek comfort.
Hooked By That Book
I have never looked at an animal and thought that. I don’t know how I would react if that were to happen. I like talking to my dog.
