Spotlight&Giveaway

Hi Devney and welcome to HJ! We’re so excited to chat with you about your new release, Timid!

Please summarize the book for the readers here:

Timid is a love story set in small-town Montana. Willa is a shy woman who developed a young crush on Jackson when he moved to town from New York. Willa’s crush lasted for years even though Jackson never noticed her, and after putting herself out there, only to be rejected, she’s decided it’s time to move on. At the same time she’s getting over her dreams of Jackson, he’s finally realized that the girl he used to just see as a kid, is now a beautiful woman. And he sets out to win her over.

Please share the opening lines of this book:

“Dad, is it okay if I get two—”
The Snickers bar in my hand slipped out of my grasp and dropped to the floor. My jaw was down there too, thanks to one glimpse at the man walking through the gas station door.
He was, without contest, the most beautiful man in the world. No, the universe.

Please share a few Fun facts about this book…

  • The story is set in a fictional Montana town, but it’s based around one of my favorite places, Flathead Lake.
  • The heroine works at a summer camp, which I always thought would be a fun job.
  • The hero has a hard time remembering names, which is something I suffer from too.

Please tell us a little about the characters in your book. As you wrote your protagonist was there anything about them that surprised you?

The heroine is someone I think a lot of women will relate to. She’s especially shy around the handsome hero. In the book, she really grows into a strong female lead which surprises everyone, including herself. And the hero is such a genuinely good person. He makes some incredible sacrifices in this book because it’s the right thing to do. And the love he has for his family and friends is nothing short of admirable.

If your book was optioned for a movie, what scene would you use for the audition of the main characters and why?

I love this scene below between Jackson and Willa, because she so quietly puts him in his place.

“Oh.” She tucked a lock of hair behind her ear. “What, um . . .” Her fingers fiddled with the clip on the board. “What’s up?”

“You read my note?”

She nodded. “I did.”

“Good.” That meant we could move on from the whole me-calling-her-by-the-wrong-name thing and get to the days where she wasn’t slamming doors in my face. “Come to the bar and have dinner with me tonight.”

“Was that an invitation or a command?”

I shrugged. “Does it matter?”

She frowned and I knew immediately that wasn’t the right thing to say. Without a word, she marched toward the building between the bunkhouses marked SHOWERS.

“Hey, wait!” I ran after her, but she was walking fast. “What about dinner?”

She didn’t answer. She just kept on marching all the way to the women’s side, disappearing inside without hesitation.

What do you want people to take away from reading this book?

That when someone believes in you, so much is possible.

What are you currently working on? What other releases do you have planned?

I’m currently working on the third standalone in the Lark Cove series, Tragic. It releases November 27th!

Excerpt from Timid:

I scooched my chair in toward the table, trying to put a little more space between Jackson and me, but he wasn’t having it.

He put both hands on the back of my chair, then leaned in close. “Hi, Willa.”

“Uh . . . hi.” I shivered at the heat from his chest on my bare shoulders.

Why was he standing so close? My parents were right there. Our table was one of four tall, square ones in the center of the room and there was plenty of space between tables.

Plenty. P-L-E-N-T-Y.

But was Jackson using any of that plentiful space?

No sirree. He stayed pressed against the back of my chair, like there were only three inches of usable space behind him, not three feet.

My skin prickled he was so close. I tried to nudge my chair forward again but it barely moved. Sweat beaded on my temples and I pulled in a shaking breath.

Jackson’s woodsy, rich scent was everywhere. It overpowered the stale beer, pizza and peanuts, and I inhaled a deep breath, unable to resist.

Sexy Hot Forest. That’s what they’d call his cologne.

Book Info:

Willa Doon has always been shy. Her quiet demeanor was something she’s always embraced. That is, until Jackson Page moves to town. The one man she desperately wants to take notice struggles to remember her name.

Year after year, Willa stands by, watching as the bartender slash playboy drowns his demons in beer and sex. Then one night, he shows up at her door, suddenly aware that the girl he’s seen around Lark Cove is now a beautiful woman.

Except what he doesn’t remember is that this visit isn’t his first. They spent a night together once before. A night he’s forgotten, thanks to a bottle of tequila.

A night that crushed a timid girl’s heart, and set a broken man on the path to heal them both.

Meet the Author:

Devney is the USA Today bestselling author of the Jamison Valley series. Born and raised in Montana, she loves writing books set in her treasured home state. After working in the technology industry for nearly a decade, she abandoned conference calls and project schedules to enjoy a slower pace at home with her husband and two sons. Writing one book, let alone many, was not something she’d ever expected to do. But now that she’s discovered her true passion for writing romance, she has no plans to ever stop.

I haven’t read it, but it sounds like he’s got a lot of healing to do – I like couples taking care of each other emotionally, especially when they’re the cause of the emotional pain.

I loved that he didn’t seem to have a choice, when it came to her. As much as he tried to resist, he was drawn to her.

I really liked the first book and I’m excited to see what happens with Jackson! Sounds like him and Willa are evenly matched 🙂 thanks for sharing and congrats on the newest release!

I can certainly relate to her being shy. It is hard when she likes someone who is outgoing and the exact opposite of her. She really has no skills to cope with her attraction or his attitude towards her. She wants him to notice her, but runs away because she doesn’t know what to do when he pays attention to her. I am not sure where in their story the two scenes above fall. I am curious if the second excerpt happens after the event mentioned in the book blurb.
