Today it is my pleasure to Welcome author Paige Tyler to HJ!
Hi Paige and welcome to HJ! We’re so excited to chat with you about your new release, Wolf on the Edge!
Hi everyone! Yes, I’m back again to pimp our newest book. Hope you’re looking forward to hearing about it as much as I am talking about it! Thanks for having me, Sara. I always love coming here to Harlequin Junkie so I can talk about my books. Your questions are always so fun to answer and help bring out the best parts of our stories!
Please summarize the book for the readers here:
Carter Nelson, werewolf and member of the Dallas SWAT team, is in trouble. Something has triggered the omega wolf in him, causing violent outbursts and blackouts. Knowing that a werewolf losing control is a danger to everyone around him, Carter grudgingly agrees to see psychiatrist Hadley Delacroix. However, the more time they spend together, Carter begins to suspect she’s The One, but dating your shrink breaks all the rules. He needs her as his therapist, but he craves her as his soul mate.
And just when it seemed his life couldn’t get any more complicated, they discovered a serial killer with supernatural abilities has targeted Hadley.
If Carter doesn’t get this right, he’ll lose both his soulmate and his pack.
Please share your favorite line(s) or quote from this book:
Instead of just giving you my “favorite” lines from the book, I’ve decided to provide a few lines from the book that essentially lay out the plot of the story in the minimal amount of words. Below each line [in brackets] are a few notes about what makes the quote so relevant.
“I don’t think telling your doctor that you’re a werewolf would be a good thing,”
[Really good advice: never tell your shrink that you’re a werewolf. It will probably take the therapy session in a whole different direction]“Things started to get hazy as soon as the shooting started.”
[When an omega werewolf (see notes in the next question below for details of what an omega is in our world) loses control, it’s sort of like getting blackout drunk. First you’re there, then you’re not.]“I killed a man and didn’t even remember doing it.”
[Which is positively the worst thing that could ever happen, am I right?]“He ate the bones?”
[Defines the bad guy in four simple words. Could it get much worse?]
Please share a few Fun facts about this book…
Sure! Here’s some random world building stuff from this book.
- In our world, werewolves come in the traditional three designations—Alpha, Beta, and Omega—but we’ve completely skewed the entire concept of how most stories see the omega designation. Instead of being the submissive, nurturing kind, our omegas are pretty much defined by unprovoked anger, aggression, and frequent violent outbursts. They’re typically loners who have all the strength of an alpha, but none of the control.
- Wolf on the Edge is the story of Carter Nelson, the only omega werewolf in a pack full of alphas. He’s been fighting for control from the very beginning of his change, having convinced nearly everyone in the pack that he’s just a normal alpha. But something has changed, and everything he’s suppressed for nearly a decade is pouring out of him, and he’s terrified that people he cares about are going to die.
- Someone has decided that Carter needs to see a psychiatrist to help him with his control issues. Enter Hadley Delacroix, first seen in Book 4 of the SWAT series (To Love a Wolf). But while Carter has his secrets, it turns out that Hadley has a few secrets of her own.
- Wolf on the Edge follows almost directly after the events of Book 15 (Wild as a Wolf), and the fallout of Carter losing his cool in that book, but this book can easily be read as a standalone!
Wolf on the Edge will touch on a few subplots that have been ongoing for about the last half dozen books or so, moving everything toward the wrap-up of the series in Book 17 (and maybe a little about what comes next!). But again, you can definitely read this book as a standalone!
What first attracts your Hero to the Heroine and vice versa?
All of the SWAT books explore the soulmate concept, but it’s more than the simple “fated love” theme. In the Paige Tyler werewolf world, the wolves are all looking for “The One” person out there who can accept them as they are. On the surface, that seems to be simply finding a mate who can deal with her guy being with a wolf, but for each of them, it’s deeper than that. Carter has a ton of baggage in his past, which is how he became an omega to begin with. Hadley is the only woman out there suited to help him confront that baggage. But at the same time, Hadley is dealing with some stuff too. She’s just gotten very good at hiding it away. Finding Carter might help her mend damage she’s never wanted to confront. This is part of what attracts them to each other and makes them soulmates. Even if it takes them the entire book to figure that out!
Did any scene have you blushing, crying or laughing while writing it? And Why?
In this scene, Carter and his packmates discuss the possibility that Hadley—the psychiatrist who has the say on whether he can return to duty—might be The One for him. This scene is all about “guy logic.”
“Okay, there might be something there,” Carter admitted when the elevator doors opened on their floor, figuring they wouldn’t stop badgering him until he said something. “But even if there is, I can’t let myself get involved with Hadley. Besides the fact that I’m depending on her to get my head straight so I can stay on the force, there’s also the ethical issue of getting involved with my therapist. I’m pretty messed up, but even I know that’s not healthy. And I can’t imagine how much trouble it would get her into.”
“Trey’s not saying you need to make a move on Hadley in the middle of a therapy session,” Hale said as Knox led them down the carpeted hallway. “But there’s nothing wrong with being open to the idea of a future with her. Who knows? Maybe once you’re done with therapy, you could start seeing each other outside of her office.”
While the idea of seeing Hadley in a non-professional setting—like today at lunch—sounded awesome, it also felt a little odd.
“Don’t you think it’d be difficult to have a relationship with a woman after you’ve dumped all your dirty laundry on her?” he asked.
Hale chuckled. “No way. I don’t get it, but according to Karissa, oversharing is the cornerstone of a deep and meaningful relationship. Apparently, not only do women like to know about all of our inner demons, they also prefer when we’re a little broken because it gives them something to fix.”
Carter let out a snort. “Hadley should be thrilled with me then because there’s a lot to fix.”

Excerpt from Wolf on the Edge:
In this scene we get to see Carter’s omega make an appearance as he loses control.
Carter was running at full speed by the time he reached the highway and the small parking area there, his claws out and his fangs desperately trying to make an appearance. There were several other cars there, probably from other people running the path. But then he saw the F350 truck at the end of the lot, the driver’s side and rear king cab doors open. Two men were fumbling in the back seat with something, one standing in the doorway while the other was inside the crew cab. It only took the cries of a little girl to figure out that the a-holes were trying to strap the baby into the seat belt.
“Step out of the truck and away from the child,” he ordered in a firm voice. “And before you start making excuses, I found the woman you just stabbed.”
The guy standing outside the truck spun around, his eyes taking in Carter, as well as his empty hands, before apparently concluding that he didn’t pose a threat. A moment later, the man reached into the bed of the truck, coming out with a lug wrench. Then he launched himself at Carter, shouting at the other guy to start the truck.
“Don’t kill him. Don’t kill him. Don’t kill him,” Carter whispered to himself over and over again, fighting to get his claws back in as the man charged his way, lug wench swinging high. The urge to swipe his arm up and out, to rip the guy to shreds, was damn hard to resist, but he did—barely.
Carter caught the metal club on his forearm, control of his inner omega slipping even further as pain flared and bone broke. At the last second, he closed his hand into a fist and punched the man in the chest instead of tearing it open.
The guy grunted and flew backward, bouncing off the cab of the truck. There was a thud as the man’s head hit something hard, the lug wrench clattering to the pavement. Carter didn’t think the guy was dead—hoped he wasn’t—but had no time to check as the truck roared to life and slammed into gear.
The back wheels of the vehicle squealed and spun up a thick fog of burnt rubber as the driver tried to get out of the space, the front bumper clipping Carter and sending him flying. Any remaining grip he had on his inner wolf slipped away and he got shoved into the background as an invisible shroud covered him and his omega took over.
Carter was back to his feet in a flash, watching as his wolf charged forward, damn near attacking the driver’s side door of the truck. The guy behind the wheel reached out with a knife, trying to slash at his face and chest. The knowledge that this was the a-hole who’d stabbed the woman enraged his omega and Carter slid even further into the background, everything around him getting hazy as his inner wolf growled in rage.
Carter watched in surreal fascination as his hand batted the knife aside long enough to reach inside the vehicle and get a grip on the steering wheel and the frame of the door. The man yanked the truck into drive and floored the accelerator, trying to get away, but Carter’s werewolf stood firm and yanked hard with a savage snarl. There was a shriek of twisting metal as his omega ripped off the steering wheel and then the door.
Carter tumbled backward, rolling across the pavement, the door of the vehicle tumbling with him. He felt himself fading further into unawareness until the world went black.

My husband LOVES this series. I’m all for tradition. But mixing things up is also good.
Nicky Ortiz
I’m old fashioned I guess if it works why change it.
Thanks for the chance!
erahime
I’m open to interpretation so long as there are very clear designations for each type.
Debra Guyette
I am OK with different takes. It is refreshing

What are your thoughts on the traditional werewolf designations of alpha, betas, and omegas? Are you an old-fashioned “don’t mess up a good thing” or are you okay with doing something different every once in a while? I’m open to something different every once in a while
Texas Book Lover
As long as the something different is written well and I’m all for it!
Crystal
I’m usually old fashioned but with books I like to see Women as Alphas too not just Men and having Men play the weaker character in a book in my opinion would make things interesting and how the push and pull of the sexes work especially when Women in the ruling roles over men.
Great excerpt, book cover, title and so everything I’ve read and have seen about the book is excellent. Now this is a new author and book for me so really would like to win it.

I like to see authors be creative… I do not mind a bit of change to the norm.

I usually prefer traditional werewolf designations, but I don’t mind some creative change in the story.

It’s good to mix things up a little bit. Gives you something new to experience.
Mary C
Okay with something different.
Janie McGaugh
As long as it’s clear what the different designations are, I have no problem with changing it up.
Patricia Barraclough
I enjoy the Paige Tyler books. I see nothing wrong with the variation on the Omega designation. Every writer in this genre creates their own world with its own rules. It is up to the reader to keep the worlds and the rules straight for the writer they are reading. It is interesting seeing how they all change things up and make things work.
lori h
I don’t mind shaking things up occasionally.

I love this series and I’m very excited to read this one too.
