Today it is my pleasure to Welcome author Jennie Marts to HJ!
Spotlight&Giveaway

Hi Jennie and welcome to HJ! We’re so excited to chat with you about your new release, You Had Me at Cowboy!

Please share a few Fun facts about this book…

I had such a blast writing this book! I adore Mason and Tess and loved giving this cute couple, amusing settings, and witty banter, and writing scenes that were sexy and fun. There are so many great scenes in this book from the piggy back ride in the rain, to the serial-killer clown scare, to Mason taking another run at their first kiss.

Mason James is the responsible brother, the one who stayed behind to run the ranch when his older brother left to play professional hockey. He’s always felt his brother’s shadow and women have used him to get to his famous brother in the past. But when he meets Tessa Kane, something about her is different, and for once, he finds himself risking his heart as he falls for this woman.

And Tess is falling right back. Except Tess has a secret. A terrible, awful secret that could wreck everything. Even though she likes Mason, she is doing everything he feared. She’s agreed to be his date for the weekend, but only because she’s a reporter and is trying to get the scoop on Mason’s brother. Things get crazy, and as Tess’s feelings grow, she finds herself between a rock and a hard-muscled cowboy.

This is one of my favorite stories, and I’ve got a few fun facts to share about the book.

  • Lee and Helen are pretty special: In the book, Tess is flat broke and down on her luck and has just spent the night in her car. She sneaks into a KOA campground to shower and meets an adorable elderly couple from Kansas who take her back to their RV and feed her breakfast. This couple was inspired by my true grandparents, Lee and Helen, who really are from Kansas and who spent their summers in an RV park in a small town in the mountains of Colorado. And I can absolutely see my grandparents taking in a stranger in need and feeding her. It was so fun to put them into my story. They are gone now—but they would have loved being part of this book.
  • A few other things in the story are based on things in my life: I think as writers, we are always stealing from real life. And it’s fun to add little secret things into our stories that only we, and people that know us well, would recognize. Here are a just a few. The ’89 Ford Taurus car Tess drives that came from her grandmother is actually based on my son’s first car that he bought from a neighbor whose mother had only driven it to church and the grocery store. The cute scrappy dog, Dewey, is based on my own sweet scruffy dog, Bailey. We lost her a few years ago but it was fun to put her personality into my fictional mutt. I do live in Colorado, but I’m originally from Kansas. And hockey has always planned an important role in our lives since my husband played and then coached both my sons who played.
  • A key component of Operation Gunslinger shows up in the next book: There is a very fun scene in this book where the men on the ranch pull off an Old West high noon gunslinger scene and one tiny fact in that scene will play a big part in the next book in the series, It Started with a Cowboy. That book is Colt and Chloe’s story and uses a fun piece from Operation Gunslinger that savvy readers will recognize. (ps…you can preorder It Started with a Cowboy now so you’ll be sure to get it the minute it releases).

Those are my fun facts for YOU HAD ME AT COWBOY. I really loved this story, and I think you will fall in love with this charming cowboy and the klutzy, curvy reporter who finds a scruffy dog, a new family, and a place to call home.

Thanks for blogging at HJ!

It meant so much to me to put them in my book. Grandparents are special people, and I would love for you to share a favorite memory or something fun you used to do with your grandparents.

My grandparents owned a cabin in Maine so as children we would go there every summer. My grandmother found wild bushes of blueberries, blackberries and raspberries in the wood area on the side of the street that you drove to get to there cabin so we would go with her to pick them. Summers were the greatest with my grandparents since my father there son was 1 of 3 sons who were alcoholics and was our escape from the craziness at home.

  2. Mary Preston

My paternal grandparents had a farm. One year my sister and I stayed with them for two whole weeks by ourselves. It was just the most amazing and memorable time.

  3. Linda Herold

I was lucky to have 3 of my grandparents live long enough to attend my wedding! We have them on a wedding video and in pictures!!

  4. Joy Tetterton Avery

By the time I was born only my maternal grandmother was still alive. I don’t remember much since she died when I was 10.

  5. Tonya Lucas

My granny who passed in April was like a 2nd Mom. She and I would make homemade chocolate pudding. I’d set on the counter and help her mix in all the ingredients. Then in the summer she had a make believe kitchen area in her yard set up for me and I’d cook and cook… making the most unique mud pies. So were some of the best days of my like. Your book sounds amazing.

My grandfather would always give us a piece of the turkey while carving it and my grandmother would get so mad. I also looked forward to holiday cookies. My grandmother was a great cook.

One of my favorite memories was picking strawberries with my grandmother and selling them on the roadside in front of their house.

My Nana always liked to play board games with us and she had a special candy jar she would bring out when we visited. She was so sweet!

My Wisconsin grandparents loved to play the card game Sheepshead. They taught me how to play. I have to laugh just thinking about my grandma Rose and how cut throat she was when she played. We played for nickels and dimes which they provided for me. My son-In-Law is an excellent player so we still try to play whenever we get together.

My maternal grandmother was the one I was closest to, probably because my mom was really close to her as well. We use to go to her house every Sunday for dinner. One time she made us “roast beast”, it was delicious BTW. Come to find out the reason she called it “roast beast” was because it was deer meat and we always told her “no way” were we ever going to eat Bambi. So when she said she was making roast ever again we were a little leary about eating. It became the running joke in my family.

  11. Amy Donahue

I used to sleep over at my Nana’s apartment. She let me stay up late and made either scrambled eggs or pancakes with real maple syrup for breakfast <3

My maternal grandmother used to work in an autoshop, so it was SO MUCH FUN talking about cars with her when we’d visit.

I grew up in Colorado and lived with my grandparents in the summers. One thing I remember about my Grandmother was that she was a lady that spoke well, had good manners, and always with a smile on her face. She taught me how to behave in public, good manners, how to sit like a lady and talk with respect for others.

  15. Kathleen Bylsma

Grandpa and grandma would haul us all over the state of Oregon as he made his sales calls-loved it- and sitting on the front porch swing with grandpa was perfect.

  16. Caro

Well, I don’t have that many memories of them. 3 of my grandparents died before I was born, and the only grandma I knew lived faraway from my home. But we visited in the summer and got together with my cousins and aunts and uncles and it was all around super fun summer days.

I remember decorating the Christmas tree with my grandmother. Those days the trees were decorated mostly with candy and even cookies. And we ate half of them while decorating. Afterwards she’d make us milk with honey, tucked us in and read us a story. I miss her so much.
