In A Song For Us (White Trash Trilogy #3) by Teresa Mummert, Music has been the only saving grace in Eric’s troubled life. After the tragic loss of his younger brother, he endured physical and emotional abuse before leaving home for good. Now he’s a drummer for the newly popular band Damaged. Being onstage is one of the best ways he’s found to get out all of his pent up emotions, but unfortunately his band is currently on a break. While Eric’s happy to celebrate the marriage of one of his bandmates, he knows he’ll be faced with the one person who understands him best; the one woman ASFU2he just can’t have: Sarah. And she’ll be there with her on-again-off-again boyfriend Derek. When she needs a shoulder to lean on, she turns to Eric and puts him in an awkward position. Should he hold Sarah at arms length and keep things platonic or act on the feelings that have been growing since day one?

“That’s life,” I said as I poured myself another drink. “A series of struggles strung together with the occasional moment of joy that makes it worth going another day.”

Sarah is happy to be back with Derek. They’ve had a rocky relationship, with infidelity on his part, but he says he’s determined to make things work between them this time. Their band Filth is in between tours so they’ve made their way to L.A. for her close friend’s wedding. The moment Sarah sees Eric again, though, her old feelings come flooding back. They grew close as friends while their bands toured together and she misses their connection. With similarly troubled pasts, Sarah feels like she can trust E more than perhaps even Derek. But due to her boyfriend’s jealousy, she’s had to cut all contact with E. So when her life starts to spiral out of control again, Sarah’s torn as to who to turn to for help. Derek, who seems to disappear when things get tough? Or E, who she might not be able to let go of once she gets close to again?

‘My heart skips from your glance and I can’t look away,
You’ll break me but take me, there’s no other way,
Life on the road, babe, I’m a rolling stone,
No matter where life take us, you’ll always be my home.’

Drama. Love. Angst. Sex. Heartbreak. Music. A Song For Us, Teresa Mummert’s final offering in the White Trash Trilogy, has all this and more for us this time around.

Some may feel differently, but this is undoubtedly my favorite book in the trilogy. Eric and Sarah’s story both broke my heart and filled me with hope for their future in equal parts. Because they both had traumatic childhoods, I thought they had a connection that not a lot of other people would ever get to encounter. They intrinsically knew when the other was out of control and ready to have a meltdown, as well as how to talk each other down from the edge. It was obvious to everyone around them that they were in love, but due to Sarah’s relationship with Derek, they never seemed to have a chance before to give things a try.

I really enjoyed Ms. Mummert’s writing style again, especially the way each character’s emotions came through loud and clear. Being able to have both Eric and Sarah’s POV, of course, helped as well. There were some very heavy situations that happened to them in their past, which we explore here via flashback scenes. I thought that helped put their current actions into better perspective for us readers while they dealt with the current hellish situations thrown their way. And this was another great literary example of music being a way to heal and to bridge distances. It’s a theme I love to read about and it was done in a wonderful manner here.

If you’re looking for a New Adult romance that will have you feeling a myriad of emotions, I think you’ll connect easily with A Song For Us.
