In In His Sights (Sugarland Blue #3) by Jo Davis, Chris is a police detective in Sugarland. He’s finally back at work after being off for injury and illness, but he’s still not feeling great at all. With unexplained symptoms, he is becoming sicker and sicker. He pushes it IHSaside as much as he can to focus on his job and his life. He’d love to settle down and have a family, but he’s yet to meet the right woman.

Unexpectedly, Chris meets Robyn, an Emergency Room Doctor who moved to Sugarland with her 6 year old daughter Maddy to start over. Robyn hasn’t dated in a long time, nor does she really get out much. So she is surprised by the instant attraction her and Chris feel for each other. Robyn’s past weighs heavily on her though, and she is resistant to starting anything with anyone. Her daughter is her first concern always, and she doesn’t want her to be hurt either. Chris hits it off with Maddy just as well as he hits it off with her mother, and he is patient in his romance of Robyn.

Chris is still unwell and not getting better. As Robyn starts to become suspicious of too many unexplained deaths she’s seen in the Emergency Room, with symptoms similar to what Chris is experiencing, they are both worried and puzzled. At work, Chris and his partner are searching for clues to random home break ins. As they dig deeper, they start to find astonishing links between them all…and it seems like someone with a twisted sense of revenge is getting closer to his final target. As they start to put it all together, Chris and Robyn are suddenly in more danger than either of them thought. Will they find answers and the suspect in time? Will they have a future to see if the three of them can be a family?

In His Sights is a perfect blend of romance and suspense. Chris and Robyn make strong main characters, and I really enjoyed their romance. I liked that it was mature, not angst laiden, but it actually moved along pretty smoothly with a few bumps in the road. Their relationship is the perfect background for the suspenseful plot that is the focal point of In His Sights and involves them both in different ways. Their relationship doesn’t detract from the mystery to be solved, but enhances it and makes solving it that much more meaningful. I found Chris and Robyn both to be believable people that I could expect to run into around the neighborhood.

Chris and Robyn, as well as the fast paced suspense plot that Jo gives us in In His Sights held my interest and kept me guessing. I always love it when we know more than the characters in the story do, but we still can’t see how it will end. Jo managed to surprise me!

For the most part, Jo’s descriptions of medical events was accurate with only one error most people would not know about anyway, so it doesn’t really take anything away from the action. I did find the blurb for In His Sights misleading…and I feel it is important to know that Chris does not start off as Robyn’s patient!

I really enjoyed this third book in Jo Davis’s Sugarland Blue series. I have read the first two, but do feel that In His Sights can easily be read as a stand alone.

I’d recommend In His Sights to any romantic suspense reader looking for strong characters with a hot steam factor, and a fast moving, suspense filled plot.
