The The Danger of Desire is the third book in Sabrina Jeffries’ Sinful danger-of-desireSuitors series, and features Warren Corry, the Marquess of Knightford. If you’ve read the previous books in the series, you will be familiar with Warren’s background as he is a prominent secondary character. While the books are all stand-alone reads, it does enhance the reader’s enjoyment of The Danger of Desire if you follow the series order, but it is not critical to read them beforehand.

Warren is a member of the St. George’s Club and notorious for spending his nights in the stews of London gambling and visiting brothels. His cousin introduces him to her friend Miss Delia Trevor, and he is immediately intrigued by her individuality. She’s independent, outspoken, witty and not someone he would normally notice. She’s not like any young debutante he’s ever met, especially when she proclaims that she has no desire to marry. His cousin asked him to get to know Delia, because she’s worried Delia might be involved with a nefarious secret suitor. Warren is also immediately suspicious of her unusual behavior and vows to unravel the mystery and protect his cousin’s friend.

He’s astonished to discover that Delia is spending her nights masquerading as a man gambling in London’s seedy taverns, and he doesn’t understand why she would do something so dangerous. Delia is searching for the mysterious man who financially ruined her older brother, which she believes ultimately drove her brother to commit suicide. She’s resents Warren’s interference and doesn’t share her reasons for her behavior with him, because – for all she knows – he could be friends with the man she’s searching for or even be him.

Delia and Warren are delightful in their attempts to outsmart the other – Delia trying to continue her search at night and Warren trying to stop her. Matters are complicated when their attraction becomes evident. Delia doesn’t trust Warren, especially considering his rakish reputation, but she cannot deny she desires him. Their banter is charming as we witness their feelings develop. Warren is an enigma, because it’s evident he is a good man and cares for Delia’s welfare. He’s sweet to Delia and genuinely cares that her nighttime activities could ruin any chance she might have to marry well if she ever wanted to.  There’s a reason that Warren spends his nights in the manner that he does, and Delia could provide be the motivation to stop.

Ms. Jeffries can always be counted on to deliver a great historical romance and The Danger of Desire is no exception. The story is interesting and the mystery isn’t simple and easily solvable. Delia and Warren are likable and entertaining, and you cannot help hoping they find love. This is my favorite book in the series, and I can easily recommend it.
