REVIEW: The Last True Cowboy by Laura Drake

The Last True Cowboy by Laura Drakeis the first book in the Chestnut Creek series. Carly Beauchamp and Austin Davis have known each other practically their whole lives. Carly wants Austin to settle down and get married, but he wants one more year on the rodeo circuit; the same thing he says every year.

Fed up, Carly puts her foot down and tells him it’s over. Both Austin and every person in Chestnut Creek don’t believe it, but Carly is determined to move on. One drunken night in Albuquerque has unexpected consequences, and when Austin returns determined to make things right, will he be able to forgive her?

Overall I enjoyed the story, but I felt both Carly and Austin were a bit immature. Austin refuses to take Carly’s threats to leave him seriously, expecting her to continue to wait for him the way she had been doing her whole life. He doesn’t take her feelings and desires into consideration. Carly has a tendency to run away from her problems instead of facing her family and residents of the town. She also makes demands of Austin instead of taking his reasons for staying in the rodeo into consideration. So many of their problems could have been prevented if they only communicated better with one another.

I would recommend this book for readers who enjoy books about cowboys or who enjoy small town romances. The storyline is engaging, and the characters–including the secondary characters–are interesting.

Carly Beauchamp has loved cowboy Austin Davis since first grade. Ask anyone in their dusty, backwater New Mexico town of Unforgiven, and they’ll say “Carly and Austin” the way some say “big trucks and country boys.” But after years of waiting for a wedding ring, Carly’s done with being a rodeo widow . . .

Austin never meant to put his career on the circuit before Carly. She’s always been his future, his one and only. But now that she’s moved on, he’s beginning to see where he went wrong, and he’ll do anything to win her back. The only thing is, Carly’s suddenly acting differently, and she’s definitely hiding a secret-one that will test the depth of their love and open up a whole new world of possibilities.
