A Promise of Forever (Tallgrass #4) by Marilyn Pappano: What I loved about this book is that even though it is the forth book in this series, it can be read stand alone and is not dependent on the other books in the series.
Ben Noble is a doctor, trying to repair the relationship with a mother who left he and his sisters years ago to marry and army officer. Still on shaky ground with his mom, when her husband is killed in action he tries his best to make an effort, the only way that he knows how. What a shock when the beautiful Avi shows up at his mothers door to pay her respects and apologize for a promise broken.
All Avi ever wanted was to follow her mentor George into the military. With that accomplished, she knows that this life is her calling. But after an accident in which many of her friends were killed, including George, Avi has a hard time coming to grips with the fact that she survived when so many did not. Now back home on leave, she never expected to feel so close or so safe with Ben.
When the two strike up a casual relationship, knowing that it will end when Avi returns to duty, neither are prepared for deeper feelings and neither is quite sure how they can make this work, but sometimes you find forever when you least expect it.
What I loved most about Avi and Ben’s relationship is that is was just easy. There was no demands, no pretense, it just flowed. They were in the middle of feelings and longings and wanting forever without really even knowing what hit them. They just clicked. The relationship with Ben and his mom was touchy at best in the beginning, but started growing as the book progressed.
I would recommend this book to those that enjoy a good military romance with strong characters that will truly touch your heart.

Sergeant First Class Avi Grant’s return to Tallgrass, Oklahoma is a long-deferred wish come true. With her final tour in Afghanistan over, Avi can focus on her future-a job here at home and a family of her own. There’s just one thing she has to do first: visit her beloved commanding officer’s widow and share her grief. The last thing she expected was to feel an instant attraction to the woman’s son. Too bad the sexy surgeon is impossible to ignore . . . and even harder to resist.
The sting of his parents’ divorce still niggles at Ben Noble. So when a warm, funny, and beautiful young sergeant arrives, mourning his stepfather’s loss as strongly as his mother does, Ben can’t help but feel conflicted. If his parents taught him anything, it’s that love doesn’t last-especially with a career soldier. But try as he might to keep his distance, Ben begins to see that Avi-and the spark she brings to his life-is the stuff forever is made of. As Avi’s leave ticks away, can Ben convince her to take a chance on forever with him?
