In Battling the Best Man by Elley Arden, Dr. Kory Flemming has worked hard to be where she is today. She did her best in school to get honors and get in the advance programs, all to meet her goal of becoming a doctor. Her parents sacrificed much to pay for the science summer camps and any academic advancement programs she could attend.

Battling-the-Best-Man-by-Elley-ArdenKory often wondered how they were able to afford it considering her father is a roofer and her mother was fighting a disability. But she had to make every one of their sacrifices worth it, so she became a doctor and is now doing her fellowship as a brain injury doctor in Chicago. Only now she has to take a vacation, from her demanding job, to go be the maid of honor for her friend’s wedding back home in Harmony Falls.

Will Mitchell was destined to success from the moment he was born. Being a Mitchell means his success is not required but demanded by the family. He was always good in school and was great in math, so when his father passed away Will became the new head of the family and took over the running of the business.

Will is happy to see his old friend Kory is back in town and that she is part of his brother’s wedding party, which will allow them to be together. He never understood why she suddenly stopped talking to him. But now the girl he wanted since high school is back and he will take the chance he didn’t take back then.

Kory does everything she can to avoid Will, leaving him wondering how to break the shell she build against him. When he sees her dancing and laughing he can’t help wanting that she was laughing with him. Thankfully he will find an ally in her parents when they convince her to dance with him. And that is how he will find out how he lost her so long ago, but his problem now is to convince her to give him another chance.

Before leaving the party, Kory decides to help in the coatroom for a little while to get away from Will. Only to suddenly find herself alone with him and having a kiss they both wanted interrupted. Good thing for her since she has to return to Chicago to work, but a stroke that lands her father in the hospital will delay her departure, and him needing rehab afterwards and with the closest rehab belonging to the Mitchell’s will make thing difficult for her, since they are planning on closing it.

Now Kory will have to make a deal with Will in order to keep the senior center open in order for her father to be admitted and be close enough to home so her mother can visit him daily and still receive the rehab he needs. But things are not as clear cut as she believes, for Will will do just about anything to keep her there and help the seniors, even if it means that he will go against his mother’s wishes and use his own personal money.

But the toughest choice will be for Kory, stay in town and help her father or leave and continue moving up the ladder in her career, which she may just loose her place if she doesn’t return to Chicago ASAP. Kory will need to decide what is more important, her family and the love that is growing between her and Will, or the career her family sacrificed so much for.
