Be Careful What You Wish For by Elizabeth Bevarly: The phrase “be careful what you wish for” has never been so accurate in Romance books.

“Legend had it that if someone in Endicott was born in a year of the comet, and if that person made a wish when Bob came back, then that wish would come true when Bob returned next time.”

At the age of fifteen, Chance Foley made a wish to Comet Bob: a million dollars. The comet comes back every fifteen years, so when Chance turns 30, his wish has come true…but with a few conditions: he has to raise his six-year-old niece and nephew—twins—he didn’t knew he has (his relationship with his older brother Logan was enough distant not to know that he was married and had twins until he died). He has to be the kids’ tutor until they reach 22 to get the money.

As he meets his niece and nephew for the first time, he meets their trustee, too. Poppy Digby is an attorney with big aspirations: being a partner in her law firm so she can tell her parents how valuable she is. She had too much pressure from her parents to be as successful as the rest of the Digby family since such a very young age. Kids and a relationship aren’t in her plans; she’s an, and quote, “icy, ruthless, cutthroat” attorney like her parents, siblings and all Digby generations behind her, after all. Staying in Endicott with those children and their uncle wasn’t either. But she agrees to stay to help the kids settle in an unknown environment for them. And a challenging one.

The kids are extremely spoiled by their deceased parents so Chance now has to set rules and boundaries for them while they know each other. Add the fact that they have to move from Boston (where the twins were born and lived) to a small town. Too many changes for two six-year-old kids. And for a single uncle who’s only responsibility was his job until he meets his brother’s kids. Fortunately for Chance, Poppy helps a lot with the surging bonding between uncle and his niece and nephew the days she was with them.

“There was absolutely nothing that connected them, save a tie to two children who needed them.”

As the four of them spend some time together, Poppy finds herself questioning about a lot of things in her life. Even though she convinced herself that her job is the only thing that really matters to her, something inside her changes. Not to mention that both Chance and Poppy are attracted to each other since day one. And that attraction is becoming to build stronger between them, developing deep feelings. Their chemistry is solid and it flows at slow pace (in fact, the story has a slow pace considering three quarters of the book are chronologically placed in only a few days’ period), and their romance is organic. A bit off sometimes, but organic and natural at the end.

It seems that Comet Bob not only grants Chance’s wish, but brings him the greatest gift of all: the love he once had from his family and lost along the way, and Poppy’s.

The Lucky Stars trilogy has a solid and alluring argument that catches your interest just by reading its blur, as I quote at the beginning of this review. As you get into the book’s pages, you will enjoy reading Chance and Poppy’s road to happiness. Is a very well written book and easy to read. In spite of I had a few issues about Poppy’s character, the book has a lot of character (forgive the redundancy).

Speaking of characters (again), secondary ones are great. Chance’s best friends, Max and Felix made their wishes the same day so I assume they will be the heroes in books 2&3, although I wished—yeah, wished!— the book has more hints about next story in the series. But the twins, who could be considered as main characters as Chance and Poppy, make the plot run smoothly. They’re resilient kids coping with loss and grief and, although they look like “little monsters” at first sight, they’re just kids who need love in such a complicated time in their young lives. And very charming, I have to say.

It’s been a pleasure reconnecting with Ms. Bevarly’s books. I look forward the next story of this series to see how Chance’s friends see their wishes come true.
