REVIEW: Bodyguard by C.D. Reiss

Bodyguard by C.D. Reiss: Emily is the best friend and choreographer to Darlene, a wildly popular singer. She’s gotten used to being in the background after a knee injury and then a bad relationship that derailed her shot at fame, fortune, and a portion of the spotlight. Dancing helps her cope with the unexpected turns in life and she’s always coming up with new, better, and challenging moves.

Emily is working hard to get Darlene ready for her upcoming shows when her stalker ex-boyfriend comes back into her life. Out of concern, Darlene ensures Emily has the best protection available from a home security system to her newest bodyguard, Carter.

Carter is a top notch bodyguard. He takes his job seriously and he has great instincts. He’s sexy, protective, and very private. He keeps his work and personal life very much separate. He’s also very loyal, dedicated, and close to his family.

“You’re really good at this too,” I said.
“Good at what?”
“Pretending you’re flirting.”
“I’m not,” she said.
“Not flirting?”
“Not pretending.”

Carter and Emily sizzle when they’re in the same room. It’s a rollercoaster as both go back and forth on the wisdom of being together with his role as her bodyguard. He brings out another side of her that she lost over time. Emily breaks past his defenses and makes it harder to keep his worlds separate.

“Good. I figured we’d check out the Three Stooges marathon at the Rogue Theater.”
“Divine. Then a boxing match, perhaps?”
“Actually, you’re making me really nervous about what I have planned, so stop joking around.”
“Okay, no joking. How is life? Are you going to move, since Darlene announced your neighborhood?”

Bodyguard had me hooked from the beginning. CD Reiss provided sex, drama, angst, anticipation, and family. Ms. Reiss developed dynamic and memorable characters and Phin and Grey will work their way into your heart. Bodyguard can be read as a standalone. Fans of J. Kenner and Lora Leigh will love Bodyguard.
