Deception at Dixon Pass by Cindi Myers is the first book in the Eagle Mountain: Critical Response series, and what a start it was. Scientist and search-and-rescue volunteer Grace Wilcox finds a naked man wondering around on Eagle Mountain. He doesn’t remember who he is or why he’s there, but it’s clear he was attacked. Then Grace receives news that a body was discovered in a car in the direction that the man came from. Grace instinctively knows he has nothing to do with it, and as Declan’s memories slowly start to return, he begins to remember why he was on the mountain in the first place and just who he was searching for. He knows the murder will strike again, but few people, except for Grace, believe him. And helping Declan may have very well put Grace on the killer’s radar.

This did feel a little bit like it was an insta-love story, which I normally don’t care for, but I found that I didn’t mind it here. Readers will feel for Declan, because no one seems to give him the benefit of the doubt, especially his boss. And Grace herself is a bit of loner, who joined the search-and-rescue team in the hopes of branching out her social circle a little more. They work well together as a couple, and they work well together as unofficial partners as they attempt to find the killer before he strikes again.

Even though this is the first book in the series, it felt like there were a couple of characters that readers were already introduced to at some point. I noticed that the author does have a couple of other series set on Eagle Mountain, so I assume they may have been introduced in one of those. It didn’t take away anything from the book itself, but I did feel like I was expected to have already known these characters.

A fast paced, action-packed story with well-written characters, Deception at Dixon Pass will keep readers engaged from beginning to end as they attempt to figure out which of the suspects is the actual killer. Fans of romantic suspense won’t want to miss this one.
