Down By The River by Robyn Carr, Book 3 in the Grace Valley series, was a warm, emotionally grounded story about community, resilience, and the people who quietly become your support system through every season of life. Grace Valley is referenced throughout both the Virgin River books and the hit Netflix adaptation, making this trilogy feel like a return to one of the most beloved corners of Virgin River’s small-town universe.

Grace Valley is a small town where everybody helps each other. There are traditions that people try to keep alive. When a man shows up in town looking for help with his car, things are different from what they seem and he doesn’t bring peace to this peaceful town. The story of him and his family is one that intertwines with others. Doctor June helps patients along with her partner Jim in their small clinic. It soon becomes obvious that this woman who is almost 40 is pregnant. The father of the baby, Jim, has recently retired from the DEA. Can he and June establish a life together in Grace Valley? Myrna, an older woman author, has been writing to another author and they have finally decided to meet after many years. How will their meeting in person play out? The local pastor is always there for those on his church. He has a dark secret. Will he be able to overcome it?

DOWN BY THE RIVER was such a comforting reading experience. This book was first published in 2003. I received it for review in early 2026. The story holds up well. Even though this was the third in a series, it was easy to understand on its own.

June Hudson is the town’s doctor, a caring, capable woman who now has a bit of explaining to do. People are beginning to notice the bloom in her cheeks—and the swell of her belly. Happily, DEA agent Jim Post is back in June’s arms for good, newly retired from undercover work and ready for new beginnings here in Grace Valley.

Expecting the unexpected is a way of life in Grace Valley, and the community is overflowing with gossip right now. Who is the secret paramour June’ aunt Myrna is hiding? Does the town’s poker-playing pastor have too many aces up his sleeve?

But when dangers, from man and nature, rise up with a vengeance to threaten June and the town, this community pulls together and shows what it’s made of. And Jim discovers the true meaning of happiness here in Grace Valley: there really is no place like home.
