In Expecting the Fellani Heir by Lucy Gordon, Ellie can’t help but be sympathetic towards ExpectingtheFellaniHeirher client, Leonizio Fellani, especially after the bad news she delivers to him that leaves him devastated by his soon-to-be ex-wife’s betrayal. She knows that ending up in the arms of the gorgeous and intimidating Italian is against every rule she believes makes her the great career-focused woman that she is, but she found herself drawn to his pain. When repercussions to her hasty decision surface, she knows she has to tell Leonizio. Yet, she knows once she tells him her life will never be the same, not when he’s a man always used to getting his way.

“I haven’t actually refused. I just can’t take it for granted, the way you did. I don’t like being given orders.”
“That’s not what I did.”
“But it is. You just assumed I’d jump at the chance to marry you. How arrogant is that?” She gave a brief laugh. “I once looked up your name and that Leonizio means ‘lion-like’. That says it all about you. The lion rules the plains, and Leonizio thinks he can rule wherever he likes.”

What a wonderfully sweet, emotionally packed, fast-paced read Ms. Gordon has penned encompassing a heroine that will not be pressured into marriage so that the hero has a legitimate heir, and a hero that faces the toughest challenge he’s ever had to tackle. I really liked how this story started by Ellie delivering news to Leonizio that knocks him for a loop and being so sympathetic towards what he’s going through. Truly, she surprises him with her need to comfort him, because he’s never had someone do that. Not the family he ended up with when he was younger and certainly not his soon-to-be ex-wife.

The dialogue was very entertaining, and I liked that the heroine stuck to her principles. No way could she marry for convenience, so that her child was a legitimate heir for the hero. No she’d marry for love only, especially after growing up with parents that married because they were forced to. However, the dialogue was also intense due to the main characters back stories, and what happens to Ellie during labor. A moment in the book that brought tears to my eyes, because it was very touch and go for the heroine. Would she survive?

Both characters were incredible, and the heroine amazed me. She’s strong, brave, independent, and I could understand why she would only want to marry for love after the destruction of her parent’s marriage. Certainly, she challenges the hero to bring his A-game when it comes to showing her that he can be the man she needs.

=“One up to me? That makes a change. Normally you enjoy wrong-footing me, don’t you?”
“However did you guess?”
“I’m getting used to it. I’m even beginning to enjoy it.” He gave a brief laugh. “I’ve got to say this for you; you’re never dull.”
“So you’d like a few more threats as entertainment?”
“Why not? I’m sure you’ve got plenty up your sleeve.”=

While Leonizio, he’s confident, strong and determined to show Ellie that they’d be good together. Certainly, he does some really nice things for her such as visiting her grandmother’s old haunts and showering her with gifts to give her a taste of his world, proving that he wants to get to know her and not just keep her close because of the baby. But what I liked most about the hero was that he was persistent in his desire to marry Ellie and that he was up to the challenge Ellie provided him. Truly, she’s the most honest and kind woman, the sort that any man would be lucky to be with.

Overall, Ms. Gordon has penned a well-written story that charmed me from start to finish, despite it being quite emotional towards the end. However, in saying that, I loved the way this book ended. It made Leonizio realize how much he loved Ellie and that there was no way he could live without her. I would recommend Expecting the Fellani Heir, if you like independent heroines that challenge the hero to not settle for anything less than love.
