Falling For the Village Vet by Rachel Dove: Susannah Harkin works for a hospice as a full-time job. Her secondary job, a volunteer one, is working for the local rescue agency for dogs and she ends up keeping many of them as fosters at her home. She pays for many expenses out of her own pocket. The older vet that she took the dogs to has retired and a new vet has taken over.

She gets off to a rough start with Dr. Chris Jennings. He is a true curmudgeon. He is nice to the animals, but very rude to those who bring them in. She hopes to get him to help with a fundraiser for the rescue shelter, but he is giving her a deliberate brush-off. When she finds out he is driving clients away with his brusque manner she finally gets him to agree to help with the charity event. This is after many angry words are sparred between them.

Susannah had moved to the Yorkshire village of Puddle Lake after a dreadful divorce. She has her rescue dog Hendrix for company and becomes close to both her co-workers at the hospice and the patients there. She doesn’t find out for a long time that Chris lost his wife to cancer and has had a difficult getting past the grief. Can the two get past the shells they have built around their heart?.

Both main characters are shown as having some heavy emotional baggage to deal with. It’s easier to relate to Susannah since she has been able to throw herself into helping others. It’s hard to like Chris at first with his rude behavior. As with all good stories, you know there has to be some hope and redemption. The author does a magnificent job of developing all the characters in the novel to the point you may shed a few tears.

Even with a fair amount of emotional upheaval, the dog Hendrix supplies a big dose of comic relief. If you love animals and small town stories then you will be “falling for the village vet”, too.
