In Gold Mine (Diamond #2) by Skye Warren, Holly Frank and her sister London have been on the run for some time, trying to lay low and stay out of sight from the criminals after them. How they got mixed up in it all is a long story. And of course it involves a man. Well, two men, actually: Elijah North and Adam Bisset. Dealing with both men–who are equally dangerous and equally handsome–has put Holly and London in harm’s way time and again. But somehow there’s still the sense that Adam and Elijah are on their side. If only the Frank sisters could believe neither man will betray them…again.

‘I stare at the man who’s so familiar to me and yet still a stranger. My lover. My enemy.’

Adam and Elijah have a long, tangled up history together. One that causes them to currently be at odds. Especially when it comes to the safety of Holly and London and how to handle the threats coming their way. Both men have resources at their disposal to help the sisters. But when a criminal, and then an ex-government official, starts making waves, it just might take both Elijah and Adam’s strength and cunning to keep them, London, and Holly alive.

‘I can’t hold her captive.
I can’t let her leave.
The contradiction is tearing me apart.’

A dark romance full of plots twists and intensely erotic scenes, Gold Mine was exactly the type of compelling storytelling I’ve come to expect from Skye Warren.

‘Memories are dragging him back. They may even claim him for good. It’s a war I’m fighting. For the man inside him who wants to be honorable.
I believe he’s there, even if he doesn’t.’

Trigger warning: View Spoiler »

I should mention first that this book takes up where the previous one, Diamond in the Rough, left off. And there is quite the complicated backstory between Holly, Elijah, Adam, London and the rest of the characters so it would be easier to start at the beginning of the trilogy. Readers should also know that this was truly a dark romance. It was exciting with the dangerous subterfuge and constant changes in direction Warren took, but the heroes, in particular, were…well, not always good guys. But not completely bad either. And that was what made this a page turner.

There’s not a whole lot of specifics I can give without spoilers. We basically had what appeared to be a love triangle between Elijah, Holly, and Adam but it wasn’t quite what it seemed. There were stolen diamonds, as the series title suggests. And there were any number of bad guys Holly and London had to avoid, if possible. The emotions Warren built between them all, including with Holly’s sister London, were complex and very well done. There was such an electric current between a few of them that it made their interactions really shine, from dramatic to sensual moments and everything in between. And where Gold Mine was told from multiple POVs, we really got to see how those emotions affected each person’s actions, which was ridiculously fun.

Gold Mine was a globetrotting story that kept me guessing from one scene to the next what could possibly happen next. With its shocking cliffhanger ending, Skye Warren obviously has big plans up next for the cast in the finale of the Diamond series.
