Good Morning, Love by Ashley M. Coleman: Carisa is an aspiring song writer, while her passion may lie in crafting beautiful song lyrics her bills still need to be paid which is how she finds herself working as a junior account manager for big shot media company in New York. She just never expected her boring day job to give her an opening to achieve her dream of making it big in the music industry.
All it takes is one chance meeting with rising star Tau Anderson to send her perfectly orderly life into a frenzy, with things moving at a rapid pace Carli is forced to think fast when her reputation and budding songwriting journey are thrown into question… will Carli finally be able to find that sweet spot between working the grind and achieving her dreams.
When I first read the synopsis of Good Morning Love, I had so much hope for this super catchy music industry meet cute romcom, and in some ways we do get this but to me this book just felt like it was missing something. There were a good number of positives to Good Morning, Love but for me it was kind of a miss. The entire book felt too slow and drawn out but at the same time there were parts that just felt rushed if that even makes sense.
One of the things that I did loved about this book was the fact that both of our main characters were people of colour and that we got to see so much of their culture and traditions play out throughout this novel. It was also really nice getting to see so much of the lingo flow throughout the novel. I will say that I really did like Carli, she is ambitious, driven and she knows what she wants in life, her journey kicks off pretty fast when Tau is thrown into her life. I liked that we got to join her on this journey to find her voice, even when things go off the rails a bit. Tau was okay as far as leading men go, I just felt that his character wasn’t as developed as he could have been, he was rather pushy in the way he went about things. I just found him to be a rollercoaster of emotions and not the good kind.
I loved that Coleman captured the entire New York vibe down to a tee, the slang, friendships and family bonds all played so perfectly into this narrative. I really liked getting to see both Carli and Tau interact with their friends and family and this gave us a chance to see them out of their work ‘music industry’ environment. Good Morning, Love gave us a really good look into what really goes on behind the studio doors and what life is really like when you are a part of this hectic industry.
Good Morning, Love was not the book that I had originally expected it to be, but in saying this there were still a lot of merits to reading this musically based romance.
