REVIEW: Her Last Best Fling by Candace Havens

Her Last Best Fling by Candace Havens: Journalist Macy Reynolds has lived a very exciting and independent life thus far, while sacrificing herself in search of the perfect story. Her parents and uncle were journalists, so writing is apparently an inherited trait. However, putting herself in harms way time after time was nothing in comparison to finding her boyfriend, who was also her boss, canoodling with his intern. Needless to say, Macy had to distance herself from her life in Boston. So she packed up her stuff and moved to the small town of Tranquil Waters Texas, where the house and newspaper that her great uncle willed to her resided.

Lieutenant Blake Michaels is finally home. After four tours of duty and a severe leg injury, he has no idea what the future holds for him. However, he is on the mend both physically and mentally. Blake is looking forward to spending time with his family and friends, while contemplating his future. On his way to a hometown celebration in his honor, he stops to rescue Macy and her enormous Great Dane from the side of the road. At that moment, Macy and Blake felt the first of many fireworks.

I really liked both Macy and Blake. They were great as a couple as well as individuals. Macy is a strong woman, with the ability to listen and turn negatives into positives. She is respectful of others and ensures the people around her feel comfortable at all times. Blake is a manly gentleman and his deep feelings for Macy are sexy as hell. Their passion for each other is palpable.

Her Last Best Fling is a delightfully written book that keeps you engaged from beginning to end. The story is nicely paced and the characters are well developed and likeable. The receptionist at the newspaper, Amanda Pelegrine, is especially memorable because her one-liners are absolutely hysterical. Lastly, I must mention that the antics of Harley, Macy’s extremely intelligent Great Dane, adds tremendous fun to the plot.

A red-hot wake-up call?

Reporter Macy Reynolds is the new “Yankee girl” in Tranquil Waters, Texas. Having recently inherited a large home and the local newspaper, she’s also got a nasty case of cold shoulder from the town. Her only fan is the enormous dog she’s just adopted—a dog who is about to land Macy into some deep (and incredibly hot) marine waters….

She was in red high heels and soaked to the skin, trying to shove the reluctant Great Dane into her car. And that was all it took for Lieutenant Blake Michaels to realize just how badly he wanted Macy. Still haunted by his past—and she by hers—neither of them is looking for anything serious. But there’s something demanding and carnal in play. The only way to satisfy it? One hot little fling…
