Instant Family by Donna Gartshore It’s always a special treat for avid readers to discover a new author they enjoy. I so enjoyed reading Donna Gartshore’s “Instant Family”.

When single mom Frankie and her precocious and talented daughter Rae spend the summer in a cottage by the shore in Canada, Frankie hopes it will be a time of recovery for her and Rae, as they were both abandoned by Frankie’s ex husband and Rae’s father. Frankie did not anticipate meeting her summer neighbor Ben, who was enjoying a special yet heartrending summer with his father before admitting his father to a nursing home due to advanced Alzheimer’s disease. Having had a few family members affected by Alzheimer’s or similar dementia issues, it is super touching to read about how Ben cares for his father in a reversal of roles.

Caring for a loved one with Alzheimer’s is never easy, yet Ben seems to tackle this with grace, determined to be there for his father. Ben’s father and Rae, Frankie’s daughter, form a special bond- which is not uncommon for elderly people with memory issues- there is a special attraction between them and children. And Frankie uses her experience working in a nursing home, to help Ben. Meanwhile they try to suppress their growing feelings for each other, determined to go their separate ways at the end of the summer.

Donna Gartshore weaves a deep and well written story in which the characters feel quite real and identifiable to readers. I strongly recommend “Instant Family” to my fellow readers.

Summer at a picturesque Silver Lake resort marks a new beginning for Frankie Munro and her daughter. After a painful marriage, the single mom shies away from any personal connection—though she admires the tender care handsome neighbor Ben Cedar shows his dad. Ben wasn’t there for his mother when it counted, so he’s determined to help his father cope with Alzheimer’s. Yet it’s Frankie’s shy ten-year-old daughter, Rae, who really gets through to his dad. As their relatives bond and flourish, so do Ben and Frankie’s feelings for each other. Before the season ends, can they let go of their pasts and fight for a second chance…together?
