Just This Night by Mari Madison: Mac is looking to start over in San Diego Just-This-Nightafter a disastrous breakup that necessitated his move out of Boston. Mac is dedicated to putting his 4-year-old daughter first and isn’t looking for a relationship. Beth is still getting over her ex-fiancé’s betrayal and only has time for work since she has the morning anchor slot. When pushed to have a night out, both end up at the same nightclub and connect.

Their one night stand becomes much more complicated when Mac shows up for work on his first day and finds out that Beth is a co-worker and they have been assigned to work together. Both have their reasons for wanting to keep their relationship on a strictly professional level, but that becomes more difficult when Beth is being sabotaged.

“What if she tries something else?”
“I have no doubt she will. But we’ll get through it. Whatever it is.”
She bit her lower lip. “We?” she repeated doubtfully.

Mac is a really good guy who can’t just walk away when he knows someone is struggling. His desire to help Beth is at war with his fear of getting involved with anyone again, especially another reporter. They have great chemistry and then come to like and respect each other by working so closely together.

“I’m sorry, I can’t do this,” he said, pacing the beach with marked agitation.
“Um, I didn’t ask you to,” I mentioned, feeling annoyance creep in amongst my unhappiness. This hot and cold thing he had going on needed to stop if I was going to retain any sense of sanity. “You kissed me, remember?”

Just This Night has plenty of drama and angst in this workplace romance. Mari Madison created relatable characters with an adorable little girl who steals the scene. Ms. Madison created a soap opera-like world within the News 9 TV station with a variety of interesting characters. Fans of L.A. Fiore and Cate Cameron will enjoy Just This Night.
