Love On The Shelf by Sheila Roberts: Alice Willoughby and her mother run a bookstore focused on the romance genre. Of course, they named it HEA because happily ever after is what all romance readers expect. Alice has the knack to find just the right book for each customer. She loves to read romance stories herself. She’s had plenty of “book boyfriends”, but her last real life one was a hot mess in the end.

Alice’s sister is married, but her husband certainly isn’t living up to a romance hero role. He wants to do what he wants and spend unnecessary money. If his wife says anything, she’s being a nag. His new hero is Parker Black, a sports radio show host.

Parker used to stick just to sports talk. Now that he’s been stung twice in the romance department he’s adding more to his talk radio. His last girlfriend didn’t just break up him, but wrote a novel where he was a thinly disguised character cast as the villain. Parker starts reading from less than stellar romance books and makes fun of them. He claims no man can live up to the men in those stories. When men start calling in with their own complaints, things start to spiral out of control . All this leads to protests and debates which make Alice furious.

Over time Alice and her mother start to believe Parker “doth protest too much”. Is there really a kind, caring man under all that bluster? Isn’t it ironically funny that Parker’s mother is a well known romance writer?

Alice and Parker both have past baggage to deal with. There is plenty of funny scenes and witty banter along the way between them and secondary characters. This book truly explores the enemies to lovers trope in the most entertaining way.

LOVE ON THE SHELF delivered the cozy bookstore setting, bookish charm, humor, and big conversation about why we love romance that I was hoping for. If you love stories that celebrate romance readers while having a little fun arguing about whether happily-ever-afters are actually possible, this one has plenty to say.
