In Midnight Pursuits by Elle Kennedy, Juliet is a former thief turned assassin, now working for a very enigmatic group. When her brother Henry and his girlfriend are killed in Belarus and his girlfriend’s killing has the marks of an assassin, Juliet vows revenge. Henry might not be her brother by blood, but he is still her brother. Both of them grew up in the foster system from a very young age, and all they have had is each other. Now Juliet is truly alone, and promises her dying brother she will find the killer and get vengeance.
Soon though, Juliet finds herself injured and in trouble in Belarus. Her call for help to a friend ends up with Ethan, a former Marine, now a mercenary for a very elite group. Ethan can tell Juliet is in bad shape when he talks to her, and in spite of her protests, is soon in Belarus, becoming involved not only in Juliet’s mission, but in Juliet also. Ethan has always been intrigued by Juliet. He is as determined to help her as he is to have her, even if Juliet is determined to keep her distance from him professionally and personally.
“In Juliet’s world, people looked out only for themselves, and when they came to your aid, it was only because they wanted something in return.” Ethan is not going to take no for an answer though.
Using their resources, they very quickly discover there is a lot more to Henry and his girlfriend’s deaths…and if they don’t do something there will be more. Finding one assassin leads to much more than either of them anticipated, a matter of life and death. It all leads back to one enemy, one who will stop at nothing to get what he wants. As the action heats up, so does the chemistry between Juliet and Ethan. Juliet finds herself unable to resist him and the feelings he stirs in her, soon seeing much more to Ethan than the laid back sweet boy she’s thought of him as. They are two very different people with two very different backgrounds. One saves lives, one takes them. Juliet doesn’t believe in Happily Ever After. If they survive this, will she find it with Ethan? Or wills she deny both of them the chance?
Midnight Pursuits really packs a punch, and Elle will mesmerize you with her writing! Ethan and Juliet are both strong and stubborn. Juliet is used to working alone, and Ethan is used to being part of a team. Watching these two try to work together around the sizzling air they create will bring out all kinds of emotions. They are entertaining, emotional, and passionate about what they believe in. It was very easy for me to like both of them, and to fall under the spell Elle creates with her writing. I really like the ability she has to draw you into Midnight Pursuits and believe this is happening! (And you never know, it could be something that happens) The journey Ethan and Juliet take is at times humorous, at times suspenseful, and at all times touching. I really liked how Elle wove in the playful banter between Ethan and Juliet so effortlessly, but at the same time manages to keep you on edge with the rest of the story. The suspense is as hot as the romance, and both complement each other very well in Midnight Pursuits, making it a fast paced, easy to get into story.
I’d highly recommend Midnight Pursuits to any romance reader looking for a steamy romantic suspense! I have not yet read the other books in this series, so I can honestly say Midnight Pursuits can be read as a stand alone.
