In Midwife Under the Mistletoe by Karin Baine, Fraser McColl and Iona Munro work well together, but when they find themselves carers of two young children over Christmas, they find they’re going to need every ounce of patience they have. However, what starts out as a temporary child-minding situation turns into so much more with Fraser and Iona unable to deny the feelings they have for each other. Will Fraser be able to convince Iona to take a chance on him or will she walk away because after her last relationship it’s hard for her to trust?

”Thanks for this. Fraser. You didn’t have to do this.”
“Neither did you.”
“No. We’re a regular couple of heroes.” Iona laughed, not seriously fooling herself she was doing anything more than any other decent human would do.
“Or two people with nothing better to do over the holidays,” Fraser muttered, and left her to her own devices.

What an interesting, fast-paced, enjoyable read Ms. Baine has delivered in this book where Fraser and Iona are relatable characters with fascinating back stories that make them wary of relationships; and the dialogue was entertaining due to the main characters back stories, the medical emergencies these two have to handle and everything this couple go through in order to achieve their happy ever after. The way this story started with the heroine had me laughing at her statement and had me wondering why she thought such a thing. Is it because her job is stressful at times when it comes to expectant mothers and things that can go wrong in pregnancy? Is she just having a bad day? Is she distracted by the hero?

With the main characters, the heroine was strong and brave in what she did to escape her past and I could understand why she’s afraid to give the hero a chance because her ex didn’t treat her well. Yet, there were moments where I got a little frustrated with the heroine because of her thinking that the hero is anything like her ex when he’s nothing like her ex. He’s kind, caring, a good doctor and I liked that he was willing to help the heroine when it comes to the two children they take in. Although, they have their ups and downs when it comes to the children and it feels like they’re failing being temporary co-parents. Will they be able to win the children over?

”Spoilsport. Don’t you have elves who come in and do all the work while you’re asleep?”
“We call them staff, sweetheart, and, as you know, I don’t employ any here. It doesn’t sit well with my conscience.”
“Damn you and your principles. With one ring of a bell we could’ve summoned someone to bring us a bed up here and send a nanny downstairs to the children.” She burrowed at Fraser’s side.

Overall, Ms. Baine has delivered a good read in this book where the chemistry between this couple was tangible and strong from the moment they meet; the romance was delightful and had me loving that the heroine took a chance on the hero, even though she doesn’t trust easily after everything she’s been through in her past; and the ending had me loving the hero’s determination to prove to the heroine that he wants forever with her. His words were sweet and full of love. However, it was the epilogue that wrapped this story up nicely because of the new journey the hero and heroine are starting together. How could they not want to do what they’re doing for kids that deserve love, family and happiness? I would recommend Midwife Under the Mistletoe by Karin Baine, if you enjoy workplace romances, the opposites attract trope or books by authors Annie O’Neil, Amalie Berlin, Tina Beckett and Alison Roberts.
