Pregnant on the Earl’s Doorstep by Sophie Pembroke: How cliché, a one night stand that turned into a life time more… to make it worse, a one night stand with a married man.

Heather Reid didn’t think things could possibly get any worse for her. Granted she hadn’t known he was married when she slept with him, but really what does that say about her? So to get to his house and realize he’s dead? What kind of a trick of fate is that? What does that say about her future?

Calvin Bryce never wanted to be the Earl or really to be back at his childhood home, but now with the death of his brother he was cleaning up messes he never realized he had. It seems that every time he cleaned up one another one would appear. Would he ever get his life back, and when he did would he still want it?

With the help of a little boy, a little girl and a little rubber ducky Heather and Calvin are going to have to do some reconfiguring of what they thought their future would be like. Would this equation really work out? Or is it just time for another cover up?

Ms. Pembroke has put together a pretty emotional novel. It does start out a bit slow but it’s like a roller coaster ride, a small buildup that leads to some pretty high highs, and low lows along with some even keel mellow moments. The story is well written, if not a bit far fetched for most but it is a great escape for the average reader. It’s incredibly tame even for the “Romance” line, as in a blink and miss it. That said there is a strong under current of love which was really well developed as it was “real” love – mother to child, male to female, brother to sister ect. This is a good pick up.
