Rebel Cowboy by Nicole Helmtempted me with its stunning cover and enticing blurb. A hot NHL player turned cowboy…I’m in! Hockey players and cowboys are a weak spot of mine, so I couldn’t wait to dive into this story.
Mel is basically taking care of the Shaw ranch herself. After her father’s accident, he became withdrawn and stopped caring about everything. Her younger brother made a mess of his life and made a reputation for himself as a delinquent. The only person holding the ranch together is Mel, but the money is not there which means there is a chance they could lose it, so when a hockey player offers her twenty grand to become a consultant, she jumps at the chance.
Mel doesn’t hide her distaste at working for Dan. It seems like every time she opens her mouth an insult comes out, but Dan takes it in stride. Mel fascinates him. He’s a famous hockey player so he’s used to women dropping their panties for him, but Mel is unlike any other woman he’s encountered. She’s strong, hardworking, and doesn’t take any crap from anybody…especially him.
I liked Dan as a hero. Once he understood he had feelings for Mel, he really changed and grew into his character. He’s the first to show his feelings and wants to be there for Mel, even though she doesn’t make it easy.
“He wasn’t going to push Mel. The way he saw it, she had enough people trying to take things from her, and he was determined not to be that guy.”
As soon as he thought that, I fell in love with Dan. Mel is real lucky to have him by her side. As for Mel, I didn’t love her as a character. I understood the problems she had and the need for her to be so strong, but she came off harsher than she should have. I would have liked to see a softer side.
Overall, Rebel Cowboy is a good read filled with entertaining banter, a sexy hockey player turned cowboy, and a tough as nails heroine. If you are looking for a new contemporary romance Rebel Cowboy fits the bill!

Mel Shaw is determined to keep her family ranch from going under, so she takes on a job helping some city slicker get his old ranch up and running. And if that means being in tight quarters with the hot NHL-star-turned-cowboy? Well, she did say she’d do anything for family.
After leaving his NHL career behind, Dan never expected to find a home on his rundown Montana ranch, but with Mel guiding the way, he finds that and so much more

Great review…this one I’m going to have to try, even though, like you, I find it tedious when one protagonist is more resistant than need be…softness does not equal weakness!

I really hope you love the book. I wanted to, but it just didn’t work out that way for me!

The cover gave me some hope for a 5 star read. I know, I know; very superficial. 3.5 stars might still get me to read it, but not as a priority. Thanks for the review..

Don’t worry, I judge my books by their cover too. If you do end up reading it, I hope you enjoy.
