In Reunited with her Brooding Surgeon (Nurses in the City #1) by Emily Forbes, Grace Gibson works hard as a transplant co-ordinator and loves how satisfying it is when she helps change someone’s life for the better. However, when she comes face-to-face with Marcus Washington, she doesn’t know how to act, especially since he’s someone from her past; someone who doesn’t like any reminders of his past. Yet, the more they work together, the more they find it hard to resist the strong chemistry between them. Will Grace and Marcus get the happy ever after they both deserve?
”That’s another thing I should apologise for,” he said. “I told you I didn’t remember you but I do.”
“Why did you lie?” Her eyes were wide. Was he imagining the hurt he could see in their amber depths?”
“You took me by surprise,” he said honestly. “I wasn’t expecting to see anyone I knew. Or who knew me. And I’d prefer not to be reminded of my life there. I thought that if I admitted that was where I came from you’d want to talk about it and I do my best to ignore those years.”
This is the best book I’ve read by Ms. Forbes so far and I was hooked right from the beginning, as the heroine is doing a great thing for people needing transplants and this story had me reading quickly, determined to discover whether the surgeries they’re preparing for will be a success. Will Marcus have any trouble dealing with Grace since they knew each other in the past and he’s so determined to keep his past buried? However, it was from the moment the hero and heroine come face-to-face for the first time where this story really takes off, as it’s hard not to sympathize with the pair after everything they’ve been through in the past and it’s understandable why Marcus would want to leave the past in the past. How could his dad have been so horrible of a father to not care for his son instead of retreating into himself?
As for the dialogue, it was entertaining and intense due to the main characters back stories, especially that of the hero, as he uncovers things about his past that he wanted answers to. Why was he sent away when he was younger from the only home he ever knew? Moreover, I really liked the hero and heroine because of their growing relationship, as they help to heal each other from their pasts. With the heroine, there’s a lot to her. She’s resilient; courageous; kind; caring; hard-working; goes to great lengths for her patients, has a wonderful bond with her family and I liked how determined she was to help the hero when he’s forced to deal with his past. While the hero, he’s been through a lot in the past and goes through a lot in this story and I liked how he dealt with everything that happens, even if some decisions ended up hurting the person he was falling for. Will the heroine forgive him?
”Who knows what I’ve inherited from my parents? My mother’s abandonment tendencies, my father’s addictions? What if I break your heart?”
“Marcus.” Grace took his hand in hers, stilling him, making him listen. “Look at everything you have achieved in the past twenty years. How far you’ve come. The choices you’ve made have been good ones. I don’t think you have abandonment tendencies – you’ve stuck with your studies, you’ve come back for me, you’ve chosen wisely. You are a good man and you deserve good things in your life. You should have asked me if I wanted to be with you,” she told him. “I would have chosen you.”
Overall, Ms. Forbes has delivered a really good read in this book where the chemistry between this couple was strong and tangible from the moment they come face-to-face; the romance was heart-warming and had me loving these two together; and the ending left me completely satisfied because of what the hero does to win the heroine back. I would recommend Reunited with her Brooding Surgeon by Emily Forbes, if you enjoy medical romances, the second chance romance trope, workplace romances, the enemy to lovers trope or books by authors Amy Andrews, Charlotte Hawkes, Alison Roberts and Abigail Gordon.
