Memento Mori by Lexi Blake is the first book in the spin off to her Masters and Mercenaries series. This series is about the group of men known as the Lost Boys, because they had their minds wiped by Dr. McDonald. Now the group has been sent to the town of Bliss by Ian Taggert, the owner of the McKay-Taggert security company. Their mission is to find the drug that wiped their memories before it can be used to do the same thing to others, as well as to find their files in order to find out their real identities.

The team needs a guide to get to the hidden CIA lab hidden out in the wilderness. They hire River Lee to lead Jax, one of the Lost Boys, to the lab. River is suspicious of the whole group, but she needs the income the job would provide. She also finds herself curious about Jax. Jax may not have his memory, but he knows River brings him a feeling peace he doesn’t remember ever having.

The Lost Boys were introduced in the Masters and Mercenaries series, and I was looking forward to seeing how they would be out on their own away from McKay-Taggert. I wasn’t disappointed. The group is led by Ezra, a former CIA agent, and readers finally get a little more insight into his mysterious past when his ex-wife shows up. I have a feeling something is going to happen between those two and I’m looking forward to seeing what happens with them.

You can’t help but feel for all the Lost Boys, as they had their lives completely taken away from them. While they have ever reason to be mad at the world, they only direct their anger to those who truly deserve it.

As for the romance between Jax and River, I enjoyed it. It’s not rushed, and River is patient with Jax as it’s clear he doesn’t have much experience with relationships. They worked really well together as a couple.

Fans of the Masters and Mercenaries series will want to read this to see what is happening with the Lost Boys. If you haven’t read that series, you can read this as it does work as a standalone. The author provides enough information for readers to get the gist of what happened to them and what they are trying to accomplish.

This book would be for fans of romantic suspense. The author has a nice blend of romance and suspense, with neither overshadowing the other. If you haven’t read anything by Lexi Blake before, I recommend giving her books a try.
