Riding High (Sons of Chance #14) by Vicki Lewis Thompson: Lily King is a smart and colorful young woman that developed a video game which just happened to go viral. She wanted to put her good fortune into a worthy cause, and her friend Nick Chance, a veterinarian, was able to connect her to a unique charitable opportunity. Lily is the proud new owner of a horse sanctuary. She fell in love with the ability to provide a place for horses to roam and riding-highlive out their lives after retirement. If it were not for her generosity, the Peaceful Kingdom Horse Sanctuary would have closed its doors two months ago.

With Lily in charge, the ranch house, barn and outbuildings are painted in bright, psychedelic colors. Instead of only housing six old horses, she now has twenty-one and some are quite young, because she is so goodhearted she unable turn any of them away. She also has a couple of pigs and some chickens. All the animals meander to and from the barn at their leisure. It is quite an interesting site to witness.

Regan O’Connelli, Nick’s brother-in-law, is a veterinarian and relocated to Shoshone, Wyoming to join Nick’s practice about six months ago. After discovering his fiance and best friend were having an affair, Nick just had to get out of dodge. While he is deciding to own or rent his own place, he is living at the Last Chance Ranch. Living on the ranch fills a void in Regan’s life, camaraderie and family.

Lily and Regan are total opposites yet their attraction to each other is instantaneous. Regan gently helps Lily realize that managing a sanctuary without structure is not in her best interest. I liked Regan’s honesty and the way he sometimes caught Lily off guard with his truthfulness.

Since Regan is a vet, I thought it was odd that he did not seem to know anything about pigs. I wasn’t expecting a pig expert, but no knowledge about them made him come across as incompetent. Luckily, Lily’s use of the internet quickly evolved his knowledge base.

I have read quite a few books from the Sons of Chance series and this one did not keep me motivated. The story was okay, the sexual tension was good, but it took far too long for Lily and Regan to get together.

Saddle up!

There ain’t a rider that can’t be thrown. And large-animal veterinarian Regan O’Connelli was thrown hard when he discovered his fiancée with his best friend. Now he’s starting his life over at the Last Chance Ranch, run by the tightly knit Chance clan. But damned if his libido hasn’t perked up over the spirited redhead who looks a lot like trouble.

Lily King is the queen of anti-structure. Turns out, that makes running a horse sanctuary a challenge. Regan’s help is exactly what Lily needs, not to mention the seriously sexy sparks that are flying between them. Now she just has to convince this fallen cowboy to dust himself off and get back in the saddle and into her bed!
