REVIEW: Second-Chance Sweet Shop by Rochelle Alers

In Second-Chance Sweet Shop by Rochelle Alers, Sasha Manning has retuned to Wickham Falls after her marriage falls apart to open a patisserie. She hires the teenaged daughter of the local dentist, Dwight Adams, who is also divorced. Both are hesitant to give love another shot but they are willing to try. When someone from Sasha’s past returns, however, can their relationship survive?

I liked Sasha and Dwight as a couple, and their relationship progresses quickly. Out of the two, however, I liked Sasha the best. She’s strong and determined to finally live out her dreams after having them suppressed for so long. Dwight has some flaws though. First, he easily jumps to conclusions. Instead of asking Sasha about something he saw, he assumes the worst. To me, that says he doesn’t trust her. Then, just because she’s having a bad day and says she doesn’t feel like talking, he hangs up on her after making a snide comment instead of being understanding.

I also have an issue with how he handled a situation with his daughter. When her stepfather threatens her, he does the right thing and confronts the man. What he does not do, however, is confront her mother. She should have been held just as accountable, since it seemed like it wasn’t the first time the man had been disrespectful to Kiera.

I was less than thrilled when Dwight did something over the phone that should have been done in person. I thought it took something that should have been romantic and eliminated the romantic aspect due to the way it was handled, which was disappointing.

This is the eighth book in the series but it can be read as a standalone. I haven’t read any of the other books in the series but had no problem following along with the characters or the storyline.

Second-Chance Sweet Shop is a sweet story of two people getting a second chance at love. Despite my issues, I thought the story was good. If you’re looking for a romance with only a little angst thrown in, you may enjoy this one.
