She Gets What She Wants by Denise N. Wheatley: Devon Jacobs writes for the local newspaper in the small town of Berman, Indiana. Her friend Lisa goads Devon into declaring her feelings to her long time best friend Jason. He shoots her confession down in a very hurtful way. When Devon gets a phone call from Gabby in Los Angeles about a job prospect, she sees it as a sign that it is time to move on.
Devon starts her job as a production assistant on a hit TV show. Most of her job is as glorified go-fer. She moves up in her job when she meets the show’s star, Ryan Roberts. She offers some suggestions about how a scene could be rewritten to better reflect his character. Ryan offers to take her for a drink as thanks. Before she would have been afraid, but Devon left her old persona back in Berman and is willing to take more chances.
Ryan has been seen with many beautiful women. Devon is not sure if they can be more than friends.
You will want to root for Devon from the start. She is the nice girl with just a touch of sass. The author makes it easy to see why she had such a crush on her friend Jason. Like many women, it is hard for her to see that Jason was mainly concerned about himself and not others. Many of us look back at our younger selves and wonder why we put up with poor treatment.
Lisa is supposed to be Devon’s bestie in Berman, but she comes off as a little too manipulative to me. The author seems to show that Gabby is the true friend who gives Devon a way out and a hand up.
There is romance on a more subdued level for the most part. I feel the book is also about self esteem and the need for honest communication.
I read Love At The Icicle Cafe’ by Denise N. Wheatley not long ago and it was a pleasure to read just as much as She Gets What She Wants. I wish the author continued success.
